Watching Dahmer. I typically detest this kind of TV, but I like Evan Peters and decided to check it out. I spent the whole first episode rooting for the victim to get away (this one did) and am physically ill thinking about the reality that most of them didn't. It's so horrifying that anyone could be capable of these atrocities, and I've been reading about how traumatic these types of documentaries are for families of the victims. Not sure I'll be able to handle this.

I watched a few minutes of the Dahmer show and then I was like I’m not sure I wanna see this. I can just watch a horror movie that isn’t based on stuff that is traumatic for people if I want to see something scary. It’s bizarre they keep making media about this guy how many are we gonna get?

I'm on like episode 8 or 9 and this show is good sometimes and fucking sucks sometimes.

But I identify with him because all I wanna do is drink beer and do gay shit too.

I mean the show is not exactly good, I've watched a few episodes.

But it's very accurate from what I remember of my serial killer phase. Definitely was a lady who kept bothering Dahmer about the smell in his apartment.

It feels like two different shows that have been stitched together. One is the story of Dahmer and the other is typical modern Netflix propaganda.

I do love the part where he's being accused of "moving into the community to specifically target those living there (black people)" and he's just like "no i moved there because it's all i could afford"

Not to get on any high horse with this, but I'm just really tired of seeing vile, sickening people having their tales told like it's exciting folklore, and them receiving a reputation not dissimilar to artists.

They use the word 'prolific' to describe serial killers.

I mean it's all just fucking bullshit and it's dumb and I hate it.

I feel like they're trying to weave sympathetic moments into it, like, "Oh...poor guy had a rough childhood; mom used amibiguous amount of drugs in pregnancy, divorced parents, and internalized homophobia coupled with rejected advances, and he's an alcoholic...so naturally he'd want to eat people's hearts and slaughter teenagers. Sad boi." I do not and will not feel sympathy for a ruthless murderer. I've watched a few episodes but this isn't binge content for me, it'll probably take a month for me to finish it.

It's really not a great show but it doesn't seem to be trying too hard to make him sympathetic IMO, at least not to that degree. Dahmer himself was very against blaming his parents. In fact, he's one of the only really famous serial killers who didn't turn into a whiny scared baby after being caught and try to blame their parents, porn, the victims, etc.

That said, I agree with mythologizing serial killers being troubling generally even though I'm a part of the problem.

I watched a fair amount of true crime docs in the past few years, often on Netflix, which I swear has a house style for this shit (reenactments with the killer portrayed by the back of someone's head, moving in slow motion in darkness; have the cops on the case sitting in a diner or bar; have one person in the last five minutes or so make a point about how society in general contributed to whatever happened, etc., etc.). And so, obviously, I get the attraction to these stories, but at the same time I personally hit a wall where I just no longer want to sit through the recounting of increasingly upsetting murders/rapes/rape-murders/cop fuckups where any survivors or the victims' families need to relive the whole thing for my entertainment, and the murderer/rapist/police department ends up getting mythologized to the point where I feel like I'm watching a slasher film

Definitely not trying to shame anyone here, I do get the appeal and may very well end up watching another at some point; I think as long as you're not trivializing this stuff and treating it as pure, breezy entertainment like these pricks, you're doing okay

I'm a fan of the actor, which is the primary reason I'm watching it. Even so, I haven't made it through one episode yet without pausing and taking a break. Yuck. I hate every single murderer.

One of Dahmer's victim's sister actually came out speaking against Netflix and said they're exploiting their traumatic tragedy for money and that the family wasn't even consulted before the show was made. Unsure from your post if you were addressing\were aware of that but it seems appropriate to throw that in there

Many Dahmer documentaries have tried hard to highlight how police assuming Dahmer was just doing "gay stuff"/being too uncomfortable to investigate because of "gay stuff" prevented his early capture. And now in 2022 it's in the fucking LGBT section of Netflix. No one searching for cute gay dramas wants to be slapped in the face with this asshole.
