Default Andy Rourke hating Morrissey in hell forever

Gods' speed, Andy Rourke.

The Smiths reunion is truly dead.

Major bummer.

Seemed like Moz always hated Joyce more than Rourke... or maybe I have those two switched?

Regardless, Morrissey's tribute post was pretty kind and mostly jab-free.

Always saw the likelihood of four original Smiths being on stage about as likely as the four original Pumpkins being on a stage again... but there was always that "Hmm, rock and roll hall of fame, maybe?" type thought in the back of my mind. But as Morrissey keeps getting trickier and Corgan keeps getting more used to having Bates in there, I think they became same-ish on the plausibility meter.

Sad that the Smiths one has 0% chance of happening now.

And my personal favorite bassline by the man of the hour:

Truly amazing stuff. Top 10 Smiths songs for me, mainly because of how beautiful that bassline is. Unreal cool.

yeah, you're right. It was Joyce!

Didn't Rourke play with Moz briefly when he went solo?

don't think anyone was really fired from The Smiths, they just broke up

your story sounds similar to one I heard about The Cure letting Lol Tolhurst go tho

I can't remember what book I read this in as a teen, but I thought Morrissey fired one of them and then brought him back immediately. I could be mixing it up with a Cure story though

Not sure on the veracity of that one...

But I do know that both Joyce and Rourke got the short ends of the stick with the profit sharing split of 40/40/10/10 between Moz/Marr and them, respectively.

Beyond the personality issues that must arise between Morrissey and anybody who has to interact with him regularly, the Smiths broke up over royalties and "creative differences."

Marr and Moz were getting 80% of the royalties, and it became a major point of tension in the band. Following the breakup there were multiple legal challenges by Rourke and Joyce to try to recoup money that they felt they were owed.

I read quotes by Marr that said he and Moz nolonger agreed on the direction the band and their material. I don't know which of the two of them was most to blame, but Moz has over the decades said really horrible stuff abut Marr. And Marr as said stuff like Moz wanted to do 60s pop covers.

I don't know what kind of person Boz Borer is, but somehow he managed to work consistently with Morrissey for 30 years. I think he started writing and producing Moz's music in the early/mid 90s. Boz basically wrote all Morrissey's music starting after Kill Uncle. But I think he stopped working with Moz recently.

I had a drunk conversation once with Matt Walker in Chicago back around 2012. At the time he was saying he was nolonger working with Morrissey and was working on a project with some other 90s musician in Chicago... I kept asking him questions about working with Morrissey, but he wouldn't say much, other than that they "traveled well" when Moz toured, which he appreciated a lot. I think he meant chartered flights, good hotels, etc. And he mentioned that Moz had a "big personality" and that was something you had to understand how to deal with in the music business. The fact that he has kept in touch with Billy and with Moz is kind of amazing, since both of them are ego maniac bigot nutters.

Edit:

Oh, i also remember that was the year that Morrissey was without a label, so his whole entourage was kind of on hiatus or dissolved or whatever. Matt told me that there was a "whole album written and recorded" and morrissey didn't have a label to release it with. But the next album Moz released wasn't until 2014, and that one was recorded in 2014.

Now I take what Matt told me back then to mean was that Moz had new material, maybe demos, maybe they'd been rehearsing new songs. Either that, or there's a whole lost Moz album that was never released.

I remember that Matt seemed kind of bummed out. He said it was hard being away touring year after year cause he never saw his Kid (kids? i don't know how many kids he has... I was friends for a while with someone who had nannied for him... but can't remember if she said matt had more than one did).

If one or two people own 80% or more of the band, it's not a band! It's a solo act or a duo... but it's not a band.. I think it was D'arcy a long time ago that said something like "if you're going to be in a band, split everything equally (equitably) or it'll eventually destroy the band."

Imagine being Janet Weiss. You're maybe the best woman rock drummer in decades and your "band" is just like buh-bye.

I don't understand that shit.

it's very good. It's always the singers and guitarists that downplay the importance of the bass. The smiths would not have been The Smiths without his bass. I think more than the drumming it was his bass that the band rolled on. Just would not have sounded the same. Probably would have sounded more like Viva Hate.

On each:

Boz seems like a class act. Friend of mine who's a huge Morrissey fan somehow became friends with Boz and whenever Morrissey would come thru, the two of them would hang out and he had NOTHING but nice things to say about Boz.

And, yes - anybody who can hang with WPC and SPM is really an easy-going and kind soul. I'd love to hang and chat with Matt "Cosmo" Walker sometime.

I think it was the drummer that disliked Morrissey the most. He sued them.
