Default Bullet - Live from The White Room '95

Just was served this up in a YouTube group I follow with 90s band videos... had been a long time since I had seen it... with no real attachment to it. After the 30 second clip from the page, I realized I needed to dig up the full thing again.

It's one of those performances that somehow breathes life back into the song that opened my ears to music and got me into this band. They all sound so great. Billy's voice is obviously tired, but he brings some vocal variety to it and screams. James' guitar work around the 2:35 mark is awesome. D'arcy is on point and is a great strong female presence foiling the on stage booty chicks.

But Jimmy? Holy shit. That little head bow/hair thing at :48 - then yeah, dude just is on fire this whole performance. And whoever mic'ed up his drums for that gig really deserves some props. As multiple comments say, that snare drum is just too cool sounding - 1:50 mark - holy shit, man.

Now and again, you gotta hand it to our band - they were amazing. It's stuff like this that makes you realize why you still come to Netphoria and talk about these guys.

For me, this probably ties with the 1995 SNL performance as one of their best television performances of all time. It was the band at their absolute peak. The SNL one might be more technically sound, but the energy here is off the charts.

the RING on the snare on those flams at 1:00 is unreal

~

it's very cool seeing them playing under static, standard light versus wanky overdone light shows

And maybe the first of many, many times he got referred to as Uncle Fester. But yeah, great performance. I wish the drums were always captured that well on live recordings.

Yeah I always thought that performance of Slunk was awesome.

Slunk is sort like a missing gem isn't it? I have it on the Lull EP but it's not available anywhere else. It's strange that they played it on TV, these days it would be the lead single over and over.

Edit: I know this live version is on PI deluxe version, but the studio version rocks. Or, as the kids say, "slaps".

Yeah that was the point of that show, The White Room. It was to present the bands the same way, so it was all about the music.

They had some really good bands and performances, e.g. Oasis, Charlatans, Jamiroquai, Paul Weller. It's a shame it stopped airing, it was only on for a year I think.

Some good footage on youtube.

it's a straight up 'rocker' without any of the special SP character that other SP songs had.
I also think it's the "motherfucker" word in the first line of the song didn't help it, and had it pushed it to the side. Live in Japan - they don't care for american swear words?

IIRC, Billy has said they used dancers as a joke (they had them for an awards performance of 1979 too). I guess the idea is that pop stars have dancers, so it's like subverting the mainstream or whatever. Nirvana did the same thing at one point.

Yes I remember dancers on that show but they were usually behind the stage or on podiums. They just seem to close to the band on the stage!

Accurate. And it's rare that Bullet does that to me... but this version definitely did.

This performance is one of the ones that -really- got me into drumming all those moons ago. it's pretty decent.
