Default Jammin' to Oceania

I can't believe I am doing this. I remember enjoying this mildly when it came out, but at that time I was getting sick about Billy Corgan. Now I reached the phase when I truly don't care, which helps. Quasar is still a bad opening track (especially Mike's fills), but I am at My Love is Winter now and so far, it's a album. Nicole's bass is so interesting in the Pumpkins context. She truly added something new to the mix.

It's an ok album. It's just a bit too nice, a bit busy/overplayed in parts. Probably a bit too ambitious for an inexperienced + new band.

Quasar is alright but the sound is too flat/compressed and sterile for something that long and repetitive. I don't like the lead guitar bits on it (Jeff?).

"Quasar" remains the worst Pumpkins song (worse than WWMM or Astral Planes in my book). "Inkless" might be the best "modern era" SP track, and the only one on the album where the band actually sounds like they are playing in the same room. "The Celestials", "Panopticon", and "The Chimera" are all thoroughly enjoyalbe songs, but you cannot help thinking of what monsters they would have been with Jimmy. Anything else I can take or leave.

On that note, have we seen Jimmy play a Mike Byrne part yet?

Don't think they've touched anything Oceania full band. it would be kinda shitty to mike, like...even more than the original run

I listened to it a lot at the time, I liked it for what it was, some of it was hit and very miss, but mostly solid.

However listening to it post-Monuments, Shiny 1, Cyr, and the solo albums, is a different experience. In that context, it's a great album! Compared to those other ones (besides Ogilala maybe). It's more like the Pumpkins than those releases and has more enjoyable moments, good guitar parts, the vocals aren't *too* upfront, not like they would become (or were on Zeitgeist).

Sure the production is dense and muddy, a good remix of that album would be something to look forward to. And sure the drumming is all over the place, but bless him, he was trying his best, the little scamp.

Can you imagine the talk at rehearsals....

"So Jimmy, this song Quasar, do you think you can keep up with it...?"

Someone asked Jimmy in that drum workshop a while back and he said there was a couple of Oceania songs he wanted to do but it's "not a straight forward situation to perform going forward" with the "technical aspects and mechanics of performing a Smashing Pumpkins show".

Dear Oklahoma ***ual,

That's a really "toxic take", friend. I think you might have what is known to mental health experts like Dr. Phil as an "attitude problem."

not as shitty as propping up a 19 year old pre berkley mcdonalds employee on stage and making him play material that is WAAAY out of his league.

remember when we dreamed of an Adore re-record with Jimmy.
imagine an Oach re-record with Jimmy & James...

Nicole was good on the album.

Oach always felt like SP-lite to me. they sound like a cheap SP knock off, with a flat mix of rockers, spacey, bit of synth, & throw in a longer epic... yawn if not done to the snuff. so oach ends up a yawn. I think everything Jeff touches goes to yawn.

I popped it on inspired by the thread and this album is truly horrible. It does have some really missed opportunities though. Pinwheels is a highlight and I don't think he says "lover" once.

Nicole was the one he should have kept from that lineup really, binning off Mike was inevitable

Remember when Billy tweeted out a pic of Mike Byrne at an airport, trolling his own bandmate and fans with “The best drummer in the world” or something equally sarcastic and catty, before binning him too… LOL.

I want a biography of Corgie written by all the people he has NDA’d over the years.

I want a biography from Chris. Billy has always said he doesn't talk about his marriage as if it's a privacy thing, but you know it's to cover up his behaviour. I mean, there wouldn't be a Smashing Pumpkins without Chris.

Billy's been silencing his victims for decades, and no one speaks up because of Billy's industry connections and threats of aggressive litigation. He has all the power, and if you speak up, he'll fuck you up.

Seriously...if Billy has nothing to hide, why is everyone he's ever worked with banned from talking about it??

I’m amazed it’s even legal to contractually silence someone from talking about another person’s behaviour.

I bet Chris Martin doesn’t need to slam collaborators with NDA’s.

Very accurate - never thought about it through that lens before.

Also:

-Accurate on Inkless. That's a top 5 cut from 2007 - present for me.

-Is this album the best post 2007 offering? There may be a case there.

-Nicole really should have been able to stick around. She was great and deserved better. There really is something about having a female bassist in SP that, while seemingly contrived feeling at this point, is simply a thing that should be a thing.

Listened to this one over the weekend and this stood out - translates nicely to an acoustic solo deal:

I think Oceania remains their best reviewed album since 2007.

but i think to truly appreciate "the oash" you will have had to have experienced the unbearable love and beauty that live inside the glorified sewage tower that led to beauty known as Oceania
