Hey Billy, I'm kind of new to your catalog and, would you believe it, have only heard one of your two most undeniably critically acclaimed releases as of yet (that's right, I'm not sure how but I didn't end up starting with the 3-star record Monuments or the barely-a-record Shiny & Oh So Bright. What the fuck?)
Any personal recommendations on literally any other record of yours I should listen to next? I'm open to anything. TROLL |

Literally everyone believes you made a three star record (Oach and MtaE) but many actually believe you made a two star record also (see: SoSB)

(There were other guitars, yes. But i did not play them that summer, just strummed mayo. Also, there were joy, fun, microhits, seasons in the sun, etc., too, yes) |

Again, highly recommend everyone do the iha tuning to an acoustic, at least once in your dumb lives
It’s worth it |

re: Mayo tuning
I've always been confused by this. Iha re-tuned his guitar for the intro in the studio I guess, but did he do so live as well? If you are in standard tuning (or you are in standard drop D) and stick a capo on 1, you can play the whole song with basically open chords and it sounds great. you can do the intro as well and make it sound very close to how it was recorded. |

surely his guitar tech brought him out another guitar already in that tuning live?

at least for the 93 metro show seems like he just used a guitar in the werid tuning then adapted chords for that for the rest of the song
which seems very un iha. i mean the intro is already fairly wonky in the alt tuning anyway |

I've never got what people find so amazing about Mayonaise, it's a hella good song sure.
But there's quite a few songs I prefer over it (a few from pisces even). Starla and Ruby both deserve to be in the conversation for a top spot for sure. |

pretty sure one electric guitar plays the whole song in that tuning on the album while the other guitars are in normal tuning. also the acoustic version of Mayo is just the acoustic track that goes underneath throughout the whole song (also in the Iha tuning), the bridge has 12 string acoustic patched in.

Iha’s electric plays that tuning through the whole song, creating that cool cluster between the b3rd and 9th of the G#minor chord between his and Billy’s standard guitar.
Hey run2me, does that annoy you? |

You can sing Spandau Ballet’s “True” vocal hook over Mayonaise and it works

It's good, but the melody ain't all that and it's way too repetitive compared to some of their other longer, proggier tracks. Geek, Silverfuck, Porcelina, Ruby blow it out the water. Tbf there are live versions that probably have more going on than the PI version.

I love the droney hypnotic feel and the reverse guitar. Great vocals too. That guitar solo is insane. Then the way the tempo picks up and then that super quiet outro. What a song!

Mayonaise is probably the "ultimate" SP song, in that it has a bit of everything that made them what they were. Soft dreamy guitar, then fuzzy guitars, powerful drumming, impassioned vocals, and even an acoustic breakdown.
Sure, there are "better" songs from a performance, songwriting, or production point of view (I'm looking at you, Hummer) but they are probably not as a immediate as Mayo is. It's strange though, when you say "Smashing Pumpkins" to a non-fan, their reference is probably something louder / faster / with snarly vocals (e.g. 'Rat in a cage' or Zero). The softer side is sometimes forgotten. |
