Default Rick Beato talks to Butch Vig about Gish/Siamese Dream

...and Nevermind

Lots of talk about "push/pull" in this

when Butch came on Billy's podcast it all just sounded like more revisionist history. He just started lauding Billy and Jimmy's chemistry in the exact ways Billy would want him to, saying that while James was great Billy and Jimmy's sound was just too exceptional not to be the sound of the record. When in reality Billy playing the parts was probably just due to him being more studio ready.

wasn't Butch literally the one who went tell J&D they weren't going to be on the record? don't think there was that much revisionism on the pod, at least in terms of what we'd heard before

Maybe there wasn't, but at least from what I had heard before the story seemed to shift from Butch telling Billy to play all the parts just because he was simply more prepared and the band was at a make or break point, to being that Billy and Jimmy's chemistry was just so special that James and Darcy playing on the album would somehow intrude on that, which seems to be a bit of a narrative post reunion that both Billy and Jimmy seem put out there.

We need to get Butch to produce them again.

I mean, David Bowie had no problem repeatedly working with Tony Visconti, don't know why Billy can't go back to Butch.

I don't think working with Butch would produce much different results than what is going on now. Siamese Dream was a case of everyone crossing paths at the right time and place both personally for where the culture was at.

That could be, but Butch has talked since 1993 about how the secret of the band's sound is the Billy/Jimmy dynamic. I would imagine all of the above points played into him deciding not to have James or D'arcy play along with "just let Billy and Jimmy run with it instead of trying to integrate the other two."

Butch talks about how he absolutely hates vibratto on vocals. Man, he would hate Billy's vocals now.

Whoa, yeah, and what if he put Billy's vocals lower in the mix? Oh shit and what if Billy went back to singing the old way? Fucking hell, FC, your novel idea is just working like a springboard for all sorts of new concepts and proposals

This gotta be Billy's nightmare, him and Butch having to bow dow to a minor-league producer like Beato

"i'm a fan of your channel", sure i bet you are. And unlike Billy he even got a Gibson signature model. Insane

I posted this in the other thread - I have no idea who Rick Biato is.

Should I bother finding out or is he just some other no-name interviewer doing the YouTube thing?

He's a very successful Youtuber, just check him out on there. He's not supertalented or anything but he's got that drinking buddy attitude that really works.

I found this very entertaining. the vocal thing moving L & R channels of the vocals +/- 30 cents for 20ms seems insane to me. No way anyone could notice that.

It’s interesting because you listen to some of the other acts Butch produced around the same time like Overwhelming Colorfast or Cosmic Psychos and neither the music nor the production are very remarkable. It really was that SP and Nirvana were that good. He was a competent and talented producer, but he can’t make a mediocre band great. It all comes down to the material and the band’s musicianship in the end.

"A click would destroy that push/pull, which is a magical thing they have."

Yes it would, and it has. And the magic is gone, long gone.

He's a very talented guy. His ears are well trained and he can pull out the notes from a song he hears once and start playing them. That's pretty cool. Some other YouTubers can do that, one being Music is Win, but Rick has a long history in the music industry which none of the others really have.

Now, let's not get carried away.

Before the Youtube fame he was just another nameless faceless dude trying to get by in the industry. But luckily for him nobody cares about that type of background.

He's entertaining, he's not trying too hard all the time like many of his peers, and has that non-threatening attitude that works wonders, which is A LOT.

Well Rick did co-write a major hit country song, but as the resident pop/bro country expert here I can safely say that song sucks ass

He also loves contradicting himself to bait clicks, but at least he’s a respected musician who understands the beauty and power of blink-182

His co-writing credits are few and far in between, it looks like he got them thru engineering and advising in the studio rather than proper songwriting.

Yeah he's been jumping the shark for a while now, "How I Sold 2,000,000 Records", "My first platinum record". Literally engineered, got co-writing credits on 4 songs.

The whole 'What makes this song great?' is absolutely laughable and arbitrary but that's what people wanna hear so good for him i guess. Bet he hates Blink.

If Butch produced a new SP record, D'arcy would still not be on it.
