ahahahaha that's rich my friend, absolutely rich. Smashing Pumpkins one of the greatest rock bands OF ALL TIME. Come on dude. They had a righteous 4 year run, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

They had a righteous 12 year run actually, and their music is more solid and powerful in that period than almost any band. It's really hard to think of an artist who put out such a large number of amazing songs in a period of a little more than a decade.

hahaha rightttttt. They burned bright and burned out just as quick. I'd say the moment JC got the boot was a good point to pinpoint the beginning of the end. Adore and Machina are average records at best and the tours for those eras weren't anything to write home about.

One of my good buddies was at the Summersault tour during their Machina run and he still to this day rants and raves about how much the Pumpkins sucked. Try listening to a rip of Bullet from the era

Not good man....

why do you even keep arguing this, so so tirelessly, on a smashing pumpkins board of all places? obviously we're going to have more favorable opinions as to the proposed "golden years" of the band no matter how many of yer hockey buddies say some performance of one of the singles at some random Machina tour show "fucking sucked man..."

I like the Pumpkins more than most, so I'm not trying to be negative, but let's be realistic here.

You say Pumpkins are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, but honestly, I'm not even sure they're one of the best alternative rock bands. One could come up with at least 10-20 alternative acts that one could argue are better bands than Smashing Pumpkins.

Not that I think they are, but one could easily argue that all of these bands are better than Smashing Pumpkins, and this is only in the narrow Alternative genre (in no particular order):

1: The Pixies
2: Radiohead
3: The Smiths
4: The Cure
5: U2
6: R.E.M
7: Nirvana
8: My Bloody Valentine
9: Rage Against The Machine
10:Pearl Jam
11: Pavement
12: Dinosaur JR

ETC

Those are just a few of the obvious acts.

The strike against Smashing Pumpkins is that they weren't very innovative. They were essentially My Bloody Valentine meets Nirvana with a dash of Janes Addiction. Nothing wrong with that, but innovation and influence are 2 key factors that one must take into consideration when valuing the worth of a band. Take Weezer... They're one of MY favorite bands, but no way would I be pompous or obnoxious enough to suggest they're one of the greatest rock bands of ALL TIME. They're simply Pixies meets Pavement with a dash of Nirvana and the Beach Boys sprinkled on top...Great mix, but the influences are all obvious.

I'm not saying Smashing Pumpkins weren't a great band... They were, but don't get all Tucketty on us man. Have some perspective.

Thank you for informing me of that. That is a very central detail in regards to this discussion.

Believe that as you may, you're on a Smashing Pumpkins board, dummy

Clearly some of us think they're a bit more than "MBV meets Nirvana," at least at one point, doofus

I mean they're no GnR, but a band can only achieve so much!

Well, there was nothing really all that influential with regards to the Smashing Pumpkins. I've read that that's one of the key reasons as to why they haven't been nominated into the Rock Hall of Fame yet.

The most unique thing about them is how they worked Jimmy's jazz style into the grunge sound. That's no small detail, but it's not enough to put them at the top of the rock and roll lore.

I assume RBG was just being sensational and lighthearted given the platform that he shared the thought on, but nonetheless I couldn't resist busting his balls for it. Most rational music fans would agree with me on that, I reckon.

I think Siamese Dream was reasonably innovative. The blend of shoegaze, metal, and prog rock is not something I’ve heard any other artist do prior to 1993. Also from a technical standpoint, the “wall of sound” created by stacking big muff guitar rhythm tracks still jumps out at me as something unique and kind of noteworthy. I give SP credit for that. Also, I think if you look at the volume of their output from 1991-1996 is very consistently high quality and in the neighborhood of 100 songs. I’m not sure there’s been any other rock band in history that recorded that much in that short a time. The Beatles maybe? So that’s something too. It still amazes me how many good songs are nested in there and in so many different styles. Billy was on fire.

Smashing Pumpkins are one of the greatest bands ever... depending on how long that list is to you

I'd say they were the best 90's band to fill arenas BY FAR

Nobody mentioned Dusty and Pistol Pete - I wonder why? It's right up there (on Adore) for me.

Songs I still listen to (all in Mono):

To Shelia
Ava Adore
Perfect
Daphne
Pug
Dusty
Nightmare
For Martha

That's certainly fair. When it comes to the massive mainstream success of the 90's, I'd tend to agree with that too.
