This is pretty close to my opinion
Edit: well, I don't think Hooray! is "unironically the best song on the album" but I am generally echoing this baby man's thoughts Last edited by ilikeplanets : 11-18-2022 at 10:51 PM. |

I've only listened to the songs posted here. So, that "Hooray"/"Gold Mask" clip, "Beguiled," I think a couple other songs (can't remember which).
They all blow and I rate this overall worse than Teargarden. I can't compare it to the last few SP albums because I've never listened to them. |

I gave it a 3/10 based on OP’s description, but purely on numbers it’s a 2/10 for me.
For those that rated it a 6, what are you rating the golden era? |

The 8/10 must come forward. I’m happy for you, wherever you are.
For the briefest of moments during the title track I thought, man what if he’s shooting for 80s Floyd/Bowie kinda thing on this one, this could really be weird and maybe good. And then the rest of the album happened so I gave it a 0/10. Anyways, sure he’s gonna make up for it in the next 22 songs… |

I decided to level off my various opinions on this and go for 5/10. It does seem to have a bit more focus, and there are a few highlights there, but only about half of it is any good. There are some pluses, the cover art is nice, there's a few guitar solos, and a few "could've been" moments.

I don't often hear bands releasing chart-topping music in their second decade let alone third and fourth. Life changes too much. The world changes too much. New generations come up and find their own guiding voices that are relatable to the zeitgeist of their contemporaries.
I've been a fan of the Pumpkins since the release of Mellon Collie, the music was so varied. They would melt your face with shredding rock then turn around to crush your heart with anguish and heartache and beauty. After Adore, to me, the band dropped their delicate touch. That was when I started to reach to enjoy their music more To be fair, Machina may have been more like their former albums than I give it credit for but I left on a mission for my church a week after that album dropped so I didn't have much time to acquaint myself with it. I haven't heard a Stumbeine, a Soma, a Mayonaise, a Rhinoceros, a Thirty-three, or a song that would commiserate with and comfort me through gloomy seasons or melancholy since '98. There are virtually no acoustic songs anymore. It's not that I want Corgan to crank out shoe-gaze, or alternative music, I just want that emotional resonance -- The exception to WPC's turn away from heartstrings was Zwan and Ogilala. I have not spun cotillions enough to know. That one has escaped my interest entirely. I wonder though if most of my emotional connection has more to do with my own state in life than his craft. I know who I am, I am not coming of age, just aging, I have a modest life with some comforts and some goals accomplished seasoned with wishes and dreams spoiled and curdled as well but I've come to grips with that. Corgan has gotten older too and he may have exhausted the ache and trials that generated the drive to write the songs that would bring a tear let alone a flood of them. So now the music the band is presenting is less organic, more machina-made than anything my soul would curl up next to beside my lady, a hot chocolate, a blanket, and a fire. I think, what would I write if I were in his position, creating art as long as he's been creating it, with a drive to keep creating? I'd make up characters and stories because my personal journey's aches and pains had already been dredged -- and certainly, he penned album after album of songs that dwelt on solemnity and sadness. I have come to really enjoy Cyr this year after I dismissed it. I cut a bunch of songs out and listen to a playlist I curated of what I see as a cohesive set of songs from it -- but I think My Cyr is a splendid record. ATUM - Act I is something I have approached with an open mind. I don't expect legacy pumpkins anymore, but I think, I really love this. I've listened to it about twenty times -- I haven't listened to anything so much in a week since I was completely shaped by music in my teens. I would have you enjoy it. I think there is some sort of switch I had to flip to come around to modern Smashing Pumpkins. But I flipped it. I'm not looking for what it isn't, but what it is. And I realize there are a ton of layers in his production, a ton of effort on his side and that alone is more than most artists give us anymore. TLDR: I like it, like, a lot. |

I think we'll get a single album out of the three acts that is at least zeitgest/oceania/future-embrace level.

If we get 12 tracks of zeitgeist level material i'll personally go have a tea toast with Corgan himself.

ATUM- 8/10 - One of the best things he's written in ages.
Butterfly suite- 4/10 - Kinda cringeworthy, but there's a hint of something there. Good in goodbye- 7/10 - Pretty good. Vocals kill it a bit but the tune itself is solid Embracer- 6/10 - I started out hating this thing, but I've come around on it a little. It's too catchy for its own good. Still not a great track. With ado - 2/10 - Don't remember how it goes, had to relisten Hooligan- 4/10 - Most annoying, repetitive vocals on the album so far. Steps in time- 8/10 - This is the good shit right here. Wish there were better lyrics and that Jimmy was Jimmying. Where Rain Must Fall- 3/10 - Somehow evolves from nothing into repetitive nothing that goes on for waaaay too long Beyond the Vale- 5/10 - Kinda groovy but not really memorable. Hooray- 2/10 - ...This one's memorable at least. But y'know, not for good reasons. The Gold Mask - 6/10 - I find it kinda interesting. |

ATUM- 6/10 - OK.
Butterfly suite- 4/10 - First minute is bad, then it's alright. Good in goodbye- 5/10 - First minute is bad, not feeling the chorus. Embracer- 6/10 - Production problems affecting all of thes songs aside, this is an OK song. Just ends. With ado - 5/10 - Starts OK then gets annoying. Hooligan- 3/10 - Verse is decent. Everything else is a pass from me. Steps in time - 6/10 - Yeah, this is ZG filler level. Respectable. Where Rain Must Fall - 2/10 - Bad lyrics. Repetition of a hook but nothing else to the song. I like the female vocals. Beyond the Vale - 5/10 - Meh. Hooray- 2/10 - There might be a good song here, but not like this. The Gold Mask - 7/10 May be the best track on here but the drum beat hurts my soul. I think I've been overly generous here. Overall Part I skews towards a 4/10. I'd probably only listen to Gold Mask and maybe Embracer / Step outside of the album. Last edited by VoxUpDoc : 11-19-2022 at 01:20 PM. |

When the full 33 album is out, seems like there'll be a solid 12-track album in there for us oldies. Like with Cyr.
Also the podcast is a bad way to be introduced to these songs, they do work better as a whole set. |

Sorry but rating Hooray 10/10 and then rating actual good tracks like With Ado I Do, Steps in Time, and Gold Mask zero means your opinion has no credibility whatsoever.

I'll do a real time reaction
ATUM: Neutral Butterfly Suite: Sounds like a cartoon theme song Good In Goodbye: Still my favorite of the bunch. It's too bad there's a hollowness to it, because all the elements are there for it to be pretty good but it's missing that "je ne sais quoi" (lolol) Embracer: It's an Oceania song. Not a compliment. With Ado I Do: My least favorite at this point in the album. Actively annoying. Hooligan: Second favorite. The music and vocal effects are nice, but I can't with the WHOA WHOAs. Steps In Time: That synth is headache inducing, but the guitar tone is good. Somebody remove his synth access please because the guitar here is too good to be disgraced this way. Also, is he saying "sha la la" or "shout it out"....both? Neither? Where Rain Must Fall: Another Oceania track except marred by Katie. I think he thinks Oceania is classic Pumpkins. I think you all think it, too. It's also about 1.5 minutes too long. Beyond The Vale: Zeitgeist outtake but with synth and vapid lyrics Hooray!: It's been said. It's extremely bad and apparently a cult classic now. The Gold Mask: I hate the drums and it's a bad closer. Whatever vibe the beginning of the album was trying to curate is gone by this point, sans catharsis. |
