Default a 71 year old Kenny Arono is interviewed by Rick Beatoff

And he doesnt mention the Smashing Pumpkins once. He also doesn't look 71 imo especially when he's playing.

his latest videos were him defending utterly cringe boomer stances. "music is getting worse because it is now too easy to make" lol

the one thing I learned over the years is as long as you can you can put your thoughts into kind but also substantive arguments, without getting emotional or personal, you make friends along your way. Just a general tip

rock music is worse and in reality harder to make because there's no funding

making rock music through a DAW that doesn't sound like flat shit requires a lot of training or a lot of equipment neither of which is free

you obviously have many many more options, but having tried both, it's not really "easier" than plugging into a portable 4-track

Not being very experienced with audio engineering, I do wonder exactly why good mixes can be so much more expensive.

I totally understand why money makes a huge difference in the recording stage. You need money to be able to afford a mic for each drum head, a space with nice acoustics, etc.

But the mixing and mastering stage, I don't get. At the end of the day, you're just altering waveforms, and a computer can let you do whatever the fuck you want with a waveform. Cheap DAWs still have all the effects one could ever think of, all the panning, EQ, and volume tools… the only thing I can think of that high-end DAWs would have that cheap ones don't are quality-of-life features that make the workflow less of a headache. But I imagine that if Alan Moulder or any skilled engineer were forced to use my laptop and the version of Cubase I have on it that came bundled with my audio interface, he'd still come out with a good mix. Maybe he'd be a little annoyed that he had to vocal-comp manually because my Cubase version doesn't have a dedicated feature for that, but whatevs.

Is it kind of like any luxury item? Like, how a Honda Civic will get you anywhere you need to go, but if you have the money, you'll get a car that costs ten times as much because it's a bit nicer? What tools are these top-tier guys working with that do things that can't be done with cheaper tools?

I'm legitimately asking, not trying to make some point disguised as questions. I genuinely don't know because I don't know enough about mixing and mastering.

The only other reason I can think of for why good mixes are more expensive is that, well, good engineers are expensive, because you're paying for their skill, knowledge, and expertise. And the fact that they happen to use better tools just comes down to the fact that they can afford them, but they could in principle do this in FL Studio Bronze Tier or whatever.

ah thanks for clearing that up, i had no idea what you were trying to say

but then there are so many variables involved as to what constitutes a good mix (or what even is rock music, but let's not get into that)

a really rough sounding lo-fi mix can sound great, yet at the same time a super clean high end studio sound can also be great

deerhoof recorded their album Future Teenage Cave Artists through just macbook internal mics and it sounds good

my band* recorded their album in a studio in London that was relatively cheap as shit and most of the records recorded there sound fantastic

*Fine China Superbone - Hunk LP will be out september 15th

not necessarily, i'm sure rick rubin is expensive as shit but his recordings sound awful, especially nowadays from what i've heard, and there are lots of great more or less unknown engineers that aren't very expensive at all

making lofi recordings from your house wasn't something that was suddenly made possible by laptops though

you could already do that with cassettes

and this remarkable thing would happen (so I've read in books) where artists could afford to eat by exchanging those cassettes for currency

i was planning to make a post about this video (albeit a more RESPECTFUL one, you jerks!!)

i found this to be such a great watch. i didn't fully appreciate what a badass Kenny Aronoff is. he's so damn dialed in with pretty much every aspect of his life it seemed. from the diet, the exercise, the practice routines he does every day for hours even after so many decades, the mentality, evolving with changes in the industry, all with a great attitude.

honestly had no idea what an awesome dude he was. fun and inspiring to see him explain all of what he does. respect to a true legend!!

one such example I recall is The Chameleons UK

they recorded a couple tracks on home cassette and physically gave it to John Peel who granted them a fully paid for session which led to a record deal solely all on the basis that the music was good

because then there was a boatload of money to be made on original guitar/drums/bass music

you're essentially complaining that shit isn't easy and you actually have to be clever and resourceful to make a good album

i don't know if this is more or less stupid than people who routinely say "there ain't no more record stores!!!" (another blatantly untrue & useless statement)

go back to jacking yourself off about The Fall

record labels are largely useless

the old industry is essentially gone

either cry about it for eternity or shut the fuck up and go do literally anything else
