I never disliked the 'wall of sound' production of MACHINA as many others do, but it would have been pretty sweet to have a record with a clearer Jimmy in the mix.

They play circles around SP's Pulse Show performance. Even Jimmy plays better there than what he did with SP on the show.

Is Machina premaster the same as the Machina promo (with a different introduction to The Sacred and the Profane?)?

The songs themselves were undoubtedly better, but I was talking about the level of performance. I think Jimmy's playing on Secret Life is more interesting as it's obviously his style of music and he can play more comfortably. The earliest SP songs tended to have him plod on and not play to his fullest potential, probably because they were still getting to know each other and didn't have as much creative input to his new band.
I'd still rather listen to Pre-Gish SP. |

I'm not entirely sure. TS+P does have a different intro, and Age of Innocence is an alternate mix. The premaster is from a promo CD, but I don't know if it is the one and same thing as what is known as the "Machina Promo", or if it's the same audio, or if they're different altogether.

Yup - not all of the videos have it, but a good chunk of them do. The way that menu works on that DVD really is cool, haven't seen one like it elsewhere: pick either track audio or commentary along with either the video itself or outtakes is pretty rad.

There's another Tonight,Tonight version that isn't just commentary/making-of. It wasn't different enough for me to remember what was different specifically but I know I've seen it and have it at home.
