Default 2008-12-07 - Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, Illinois, US (HD/SBD Mix) *New surfaced video*

I'll upload the raw video recording to dimeadozen.org shortly (It's about 16GB in size). This video is being circulated for the first time having just been acquired from the original taper and is a complete HD video source of the 2008 Aragon show.

I've also uploaded a version to Youtube mixed with the SBD of the show which I'm sharing now. Enjoy!

only like 15 mins in, but it's kinda depressing knowing how shitty this tour went. they're playing really well. the tonight arrangement feels weird but tarantula > SIYL rips

To be fair, can you imagine being a regular, casual fan and having to sit through Set The Controls to get to Ava Adore, Disarm, and 1979?

The same people who complained about this had no problem listening to long guitar feedback drone sets by sonic youth. I thought this was brilliant to see live.

Buzzo from the melvins recently said something to the effect of this— when it come to fans of music, the fans are extremely conservative. They don’t like it when an artist does something out of their expected box or comfort zone, and if they do so, they get eviscerated. He’s 100% right.

Also it’s a sin that 99 floors was never recorded. Had this band survived past this tour, I think they’d have made a fantastic album, if this song was any indication of what was to come.

2009 is not recognized as the SP downfall that it should be. They had a killer album brewing in them. Teargarden is a lot like Adore (that was painful to type) in the sense that Billy lost Jimmy was as totally aimless in the studio again.

99 floors kicks fucking ass

i'm very conservative in terms of listening to music and i really hate that - i still think fucking big guitars are badass, i mean fuck. whenever i go to gigs [1.5 years ago, that is] i look at the sets they've recently done to make sure i know of all the songs

it's so dumb. like i only just realized spotify is good, and if you have 60 bootlegs in iTunes it serves you right if it breaks

Huh, I was at this show. With a friend who's dead now. I think it was announced super-last-minute, and I blew off my job at Sears Parts & Repair.

Gossamer is fuckinig sick. Why they never recorded it, I have no idea. Unarguably the peak of the Zeitgeist/reunion era, and this may be the definitive version

Amazing, thank you.

This is good shit.

Last thing I have to say is if this version of United States was on the album, it would substantially elevate the whole thing. God dayum.

especially before such a lovely, delicate song. well, except for the dropped consonants, which seem particularly aggressive here.

gossamer, 99 floors, song for a son, owatta, united states, superchrist are all top tier here imo. on the shows of this tour, as rome burns, march hare were also super promising. jimmy leaving right after this tour really put a stop to the progress they had made up to this point.

but yes, the shit talking reminds us all of why jimmy left. it's was horrendous on this tour. billy was too upset about the negative press.

This 2007/2008 lineup of the band was the only lineup (including the current iteration) I felt had the potential to carry the band's identity forward. It would have been a different beast than the classic lineups, but equally interesting. The progress they made from the 2007 return show in Paris to these shows was unbelievable. As others have pointed out, Billy being a dick during the whole tour torpedoed the whole thing, to the point that a lot of fans and music outlets ignored that these were some of the best set lists they'd ever played.

In regards to "Gossamer", I always find these to the the definitive versions. They are long enough to be interesting and unique every night, but not long for the sake of being long like at the residencies. In all fairness, a studio version probably would have just neutered the song like Billy did with "United States" and "Superchrist". I'm much happier with soundboards like these.

Watching this, I cannot believe just a year and a half later, they were struggling to sell tiny theaters with Mike Byrne and Nicole. The fall from grace was immediate.

That's a fair point, but United States in particular seemed to find some sort of identity after a year+ of live testing, and that's an often overlooked point of distinction between SP1 and SP2. BWBW was first played live in like '93 or something, right? He gets in a groove that leads to good songwriting. ZG is just so forced and over-engineered, and its so obviously the result of Billy overthinking and not doing the testing in front of actual people and seeing what works
