Default The Pains of Being Pure At Heart: latest S.P. soundalike band

Just downloaded their latest album Belong. Move over Joy Formidable and Silversun Pickups

Why is it that all of these Pumpkins wannabe bands have singers with effeminate / nasal voices?

They're not as moody as Silversun Pickups or Joy Formidable. It's very catchy for the most part.

Not hearing it. At all.

Every time someone says "this or that band sounds like SP" I actually get my hopes up. But they never do. And most certainly not this band. :/

And Swoon sounds a lot like Siamese Dream. How can you not hear that?

Really don't hear it. Swoon (as well as Pikul & Carnavas) sounds wimpy and flimsy compared to the layers & layers of Siamese Dream, and SSPU's drummer plays repetitive, simple beats, whereas half the fun of Siamese Dream is the muscular inventive drumming with creative fills.

I like SSPU, and sure, they fit in the same genre; maybe not a night & day difference. Doesn't sound like SP to me, though.

Although, it'd be nice if TGbK was even remotely as good as SSPU or Joy Formidable.

They are fairly upbeat but I can still hear a lot of Pumpkins in the riffs and the way he sings. Several of the songs remind me of Today or Frail and Bedazzled.

oh yikes, what's my major?

I'm dl'ing the correct album now, so I may change my mind and heAR something different. Siamese Dream is edgier than you guys seem to think, so.

I prefer Slowdive to MBV many times over, but again I don't think the Pumpkins are that shoegazey, even SD. There are more distinct hard rock elements in Pumpkins songs that imitation bands or shoegaze/dream pop bands lack.

I also prefer Slowdive to MBV. I like the dreamier shoegaze stuff like Slowdive and Kitchens of Distinction.

Machina is very shoegaze sounding at times. Even moreso than Siamese Dream.

Totally agree about Machina having a shoegaze vibe. It's the lack of distinct notes in the guitar lines, I think. That dreamy, ambient blurring of the sounds. Siamese Dream has so many awesome solos, it just can't be shoegaze!

Listened to a few of their songs on Youtube because the previous recommendation of The Joy Formidable was excellent... however in this case the similarities are tenuous. The song "Belong" is probably the closest sounding to SP.

To be honest the singing was quite boring.

Pfffft. Very first hit on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLVrTruj_Aw

No, sounds late 80s collage rock, but nothing like SP.

Second hit...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4itzHRpltQ
Nope, no SP just late 80s collage rock again.

Third hit...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMyURfKRTEM
Still no.

Then finally I hear "Belong"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dt1zWdmB4c
And by this point, no, it's the same thing, only they invested in a big muff or two. Whooopty friggin doo.
