you know how there was a whole thing about how people thought Adore was gonna be an acoustic album and others thought it would be electronic and billy was kind of like well it's neither actually

it would have been cool if the softer folky songs and the more electronic songs were separated into different stylistically cohesive releases, so there would be that continuation of the cyber goth thing that was explored with Eye and Tight Bite, which was a continuation of what started in the MCIS era anyway

and then without Sven Borkborkbork's technical guruism, the folky songs would have more human emotion to make people feel sad, like sad songs are supposed to, instead of being lightened up by machines that will always be your friend

I would remove it from Adore because I hate fun.

Best Adore take I’ve read on this forum. A double sider, one acoustic, one electro-goth.

That's what I remember thinking MCIS was gonna be; rock songs on one disc and soft songs on another.

"Tight bite"

I think this impression was in the air at the time, because I remember asking a music store employee when the album was coming out, and he started going on about how it would be a double album, separated in just the way you're proposing

I believe this would be bad. Adore is a bit of a cosmic gumbo and it's best not to mess with such concoctions

Coming off the success of MCIS, there was inevitably going to be backlash to whatever the follow-up was. If Adore was a double album, just imagine how much it would've been panned. It's easy to do revisionist history with an album that the hardcore fans love or have grown to love, but "alternative" music in 1998 on radio and MTV was very different than anything SP was doing in the Adore era, save for "Perfect" and "Ava Adore," and even the latter is a stretch.

Look at the "alt bands" on the Billboard Hot 100 the week Adore came out...you get Third Eye Blind, Verve Pipe, Marcy Playground, Garbage, etc. Otherwise the entire chart is dominated by boy bands, late-90s hip hop and Maria Carey shit.

I only point this out to remind ourselves that in 1998, the music biz was still controlled by major labels that were riding the waves of commercial radio, MTV and getting a coveted spot on the Billboard Hot 100 to drive album sales. I'm sure Virgin was pissed at the time that Billy didn't put LMGTWTY or Waiting on the album...the two songs, along with Perfect, that were the most radio friendly and would've been really big hits at the time.

God tier song

It’s about going mad for love. He’s singing these over the top couplets that would only sound romantic to a couple of birds who have lost the plot. It’s perfect.

Eat sack,

they do the same "lift-off" in the chorus as they do in "everlasting gaze" and kind of in "heavy metal machine"

"Arcane night music" is also pretty good as a title.

I remember Arcane night music as a descriptor....

but billy was full of shit describing his music at the time (all the time)
I still wonder how Machina sounds like the band Mountain. I remember him repeating that a few times. "next album, super influenced by Mountain. if you don't know 'em, check 'em out!" ???what?

I'm sure he was joking. Mountain were just blues rock. I mean, not much of "Mississippi Queen" is apparent on MCIS. Or is it???
