i am immensely happy they're recording in the same room

why would you ever not do that when making a record; a collaborative piece that takes a lot of work

It's only Billy and Jimmy in Billy's home studio. They did the same for CYR. They are neighbours, whereas James and Jeff live in LA.

Having JC in the room with Billy did wonders for CYR.

Yeah it looks like Pumpkinland II in Northbrook, Illinois.

FFS if that's how he writes songs these days, at the studio with 5 people around, maybe we've found what the problem is.

Writing killer songs is not a white collar job.

Momma update:

Pitchfork Review: 7.2
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/undefined/

"Thirty years ago, the biggest sin an alt-rock band could commit was making it big. When the Smashing Pumpkins did it, Pavement dissed them directly: “I don’t understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck,” Stephen Malkmus sneered on 1994’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Brooklyn duo Momma reference both bands on their third album, Household Name, a cheeky spin on Gen-X slacker rock by zillennial high-school friends Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten. Some of the band’s biggest musical heroes—Nirvana, Liz Phair—have lamented the trials of rock stardom. On Household Name, Momma seem to argue: What would be so bad about stepping into the limelight?

Household Name operates with foresight the Smashing Pumpkins lacked: If you aspire to selling out before other people accuse you of it, can their ridicule even touch you? The 2020s pop-punk renaissance has bred a number of acts whose schticky self-awareness often transpires as braggadocio. But no one said Momma weren’t putting in the work: Household Name opens with “Rip Off,” a song that navigates the art of schmoozing industry insiders between complimentary whiskey shots. “Rockstar,” the first song Momma wrote for the album, channels Pixies’ loud/quiet dynamics as the band seem to talk themselves down from impending imposter syndrome: “It takes a lot to admit it/Yeah, I got what they want/I’m a real rockstar,” the duo intone. On “No Stage,” Momma speculate that the only fate worse than remaining a nobody is to shine bright and flame out: “If I’m famous for the night/I’ll be lonely all my life.”

How depressing to see folks still talking about the concept of "selling out" in the year of our lord 2022. Maybe get someone with their original hairline intact to review this, lol, lmao

It is funny looking back at how most of the alt rock bands made not being famous such a big thing, even while they were famous. Not the aesthetic today.

Found it. It is hilarious. THE most pretentious thing I have ever read - it is self-parody, blows everything Billy’s been teased for saying out of the water and then some. I couldn’t recommend it enough if you want a good laugh.

That Momma album is pretty good indie rock tbh though. Juliana Hatfield and Liz Phair vibes meets Veruca Salt.

"Pitchdork...."? I don't think anyone has thought of that burn before.

In all seriousness, I read an interview with the man who wrote that review as part of the 25th anniversary of the site. He tried to play it off like he was making some kind of joke by writing an intentionally over the top review, but as someone who once drank firmly from the Pitchfork cup (still glance at it occasionally, but haven't read it more than once every few months since 2007 or 2008), I have no doubts that review was written from a place of 100% sincerity.
