belly will produce it, but he will flood the studio while he's producing. is that an acceptable compromise for you?

It would be cool if James produced it. He's produced a few albums/tracks.

It’s pretty simple for me: if he finally gives up on that trash vibrato and dropped consonant singing style, and just sings normal—doesn’t even have to have screams or anything—then there is a lot of potential. But if his vocals are weird and garbage, it will sour 100% of anything he/they write for it.

MCIS was a new reinvention for the band, and Machina was a new Reinvention for the band.
Fuck, EVERY album billy's heralded as a 'new reinvention/facet of the band' - why would this be any different? I'm surprised he hasn't announced that the sequel WAS Cyr but only the REAL fans knew or understood....

I thought Cyr was pretty good after listening to it in full. I have no idea what to expect but I'm actually more optimistic after Cyr. Say what you want about it but SP followed through fully with what they wanted to do

Cyr is good imo. Not great or anything but listenable and pleasant. Which is definitely an improvement. I have 0% faith that whatever coming up will be good though

But do you actually want to listen to Cyr regularly?

I listen to it when I'm working sometimes, so I guess so? It's not at the top of my list but when I need something I'm familiar with so it doesn't distract me, it's an option. Monuments, Teargarden etc would never be. But not opposed to Zeitgeist either as work music

According to iTunes:

Cyr - 20 plays
MTAE - 14 plays
Teargarden - 13 plays
Shiny Vol 1 - 10 plays

(Silvery Sometimes - 40 plays)

I will stick my Cyr mix on every few weeks, not completely tired of it yet, though the sheen has definitely worn off.

Is there any indication of who is producing? He needs someone to come in at this stage, who'll challenge him and who understands what a Pumpkins record should sound like. If he's still using Howard Willing and so on then it'll just be more of the same.

The thing is though, it's a sequel to Machina too - not the best album from SP1 I think we all agree.

There OUGHT to be some James songs on it - or at least vocals from him - if it's to have anything to do with the "this is a band" concept of MCIS. James can record parts remotely so he doesn't need to be in the studio. Perhaps they're tracking all the drums first and will add the guitars on later, in a different location.

So when is this supposed to be out? This year? Next year seems more likely.

Wonder what the cover will be - similar kind of painting / artwork to MCIS?

oh wow, of course! signature SP is a james song on every record, it's a perfect inclusion to break up the barrage of corgan songs. adds a jazzy lovely twist. like putting sauce on dry food

Billy is producing. He said so in an Instagram Q&A before Christmas

Also anyone expecting "proper" vocals on this...there have been loud and nauseating vocals on Zeitgeist, American Gothic, Teargarden, Oceania, Monuments, Ogilala, Shiny, Cotillions and Cyr....he's not gonna suddenly change now, especially producing it himself.

Vic Salazar (drum tech) behind JC's kit

Got some great mics on there. The remote hat on Jimmy's left is a new one on me...

Couple more pics on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/victor.sala...28726683851491

Looks like Blackbird Studio A in Nashville. Watched a video earlier showing the red wall panels that flip for more reflective wood. If I'm right, get ready for some awesome sounding drums.

Edit: Yep.

___
drum nerd shit

* i guess if you're cool you get heads in bags instead of boxes
* he used to [1 yr ago] have tiny remote hats in front of his kick right above his knee. maybe/probably the same pair
* that transformer thing on the left too

I've recorded drums in a studio with mics like that, drums sounded incredible!

...until it was butchered via an incredibly poor mix. None of that means shit if the production suffers or if they're buried under too many layers, e.g. MCIS.

No, saying that some of the vocals on Oceania weren't that bad. At this point it's less about how he sings the songs and more about how he produces / mixes the vocals.

If they are dry and to the front, then it's game over. If they are tracked and sitting in the mix, then that's not so bad. The recent amateur remixes from Netphorians have shown the difference even a small tweak can make.

My hope is that he's gotten the synth thing out of his system. One would hope so after releasing 20 songs of it.

If Jimmy's drums sound like Jimmy's drums, then at least that's something.

It would also be nice if the pallet was expanded to have strings and arrangements like Cupid.

There are kids recording with a usb mic and a knockoff guitar on a laptop doing better records than our Patrick.

Really the vocal mix seems to be the least of his problems.

It's just the lack of producer, honestly getting some experienced dude who will not be afraid to challenge Billiam's dubious production choices would work wonders

Rick Rubin didn't turn Shiny into a great record tho.

Rick Rubin does fuck all though apart from lie on a couch, it's well documented he's a hands off producer

It's just a name to give the album more clout, I suspect 99.8% of the production was BC and Howard Willing

When you have a string of commerical hits like...

Mary Star of the Sea, Zeitgeist, Teargarden, Oceania, Monuments to An Elegy, Day For Night, Cyr...

...you don't fuck around with the formula. You keep Big Willie P behind the desk doing what he does best, producing Big Willie P records no-one buys.
