Food Network Thread
Here are some things I have never heard of or was largely unfamiliar with before the food network enlightened me...and man do they use these ingredients a lot
Gnocchi Mascarpone Prosecco Pancetta Broccoli Rabe Cherimoya Quail Eggs Have any of you foodies used this stuff? Makes me feel kinda bad that I eat mostly cereal and fruits, there's no skill in preparing that. Do you guys ever watch anything on this channel? I like Chopped, Ted Allen is quite soothing. I do not like the Barefoot Contessa, what the fuck is that?!? |

I like gnocchi, marscapone and and pancetta...haven't had the others. I used to make wholemeal gnocchi with my elder son when he was little, we had more time for that kind of thing then. My favorite recipe with pancetta at the moment is from a River Cottage cookbook, it's so simple just pancetta and new potatoes and peas, olive oil and garlic.
I wish we did have the food network but we decided to use the money we were considering spending on cable, to sponsor two children in India through world vision. Which is kinda cool. Ideally we could have both though, I love cooking shows. |

I've cooked with everything on your list.
Barefoot contessa sucks. Not a big fan of quail eggs. broccoli rabe is tasty but don't overcook it. gnocchi needs to be made with mostly Potato |

the food network sucks
it encourages excess and teaches nothing about cooking which is supposed to be the premise of it all you don't learn to cook by watching people on fucking tv cook, you'd learn more going to the site and read the recipe and trying it out until you get it right its just pointless these shows are edited to death where all of a sudden a perfect meal is pulled out of the oven which was already in the oven and not the one that was actually prepared its just food porn i get watching it to see delicious food prepared by professionals but i just don't get it i mean julia child when you watch her and get over the voice probably you'd learn to do stuff right but not how its presented on this network now the travel/weird food shows are the only good food programming and they're just all about how entertaining anthony bourdain naturally is and how weird the shit that zimmer guy eats |

I learned how to make a french omlette by watching Gordon Ramsey show some other lady how to do it. I guess that is the only thing I've learned after a lot of watching though, so that's not great is it. And it's only an omelette. I think my favorite tv chef is Rick Stein, though. And I do watch him just as much for him as the food.

I don't care for the direct cooking shows as much, I like the competitions. I know it's staged and full of exaggerated personalities, but it's television. I've learned a few helpful tips actually. And Alton Brown

This. I really don't see the appeal of the woman at all. Her delivery is flat, her recipes are uninspiring and the show is tedious to watch. It's not the worst programme on the show though - that honor goes to Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with that arsepiece Guy Fieri.
I don't watch this channel at all tbh, but my wife has it on every now and then because she enjoys Ace of Cakes. |

they need a show with an old mexican lady teaching how to make mexican food. i don't much care for learning how to make confit d'oie or egg white frittata with lox and arugula.
i never watch television but sometimes we will watch chow tips on youtube. those are just tips, though. |

I had dinner once with Mario Batali. He's coll. On tv he looks huge. in real life he's the size of a hobbit. He was also wearing crocs, cargo shorts and a vest, just like he does on tv. I spoke with someone who works with him and they said he wears that same outfit every single day. Of all the TV chefs he's one of the few that I have any respect for. Probably because he doesn't do the typical "cooking show" I had dinner about 10 years ago with Emeril Lagasse and his wife. Very charming guy, but I can't stand his tv shows. Just like all the other "cooking shows" he's just acting out the recipes on a stage. Someone else preps everything and creates the recipes. He just performs it. when it comes to food shows, I'd rather watch something like Anthony Bourdain's. I'd rather see a travel program or a show that talks about the culture or the context of food than some celebrity recipe schtick. Last edited by MyOneAndOnly : 02-27-2012 at 09:15 AM. |

The person I always wanted to have dinner with is Nigella Lawson, but in recent years I get the impression that she is actually a bit of a dick.
