Rock am Ring version is the best. close second would be 7/30/07, and the 20th anniversary versions are pretty good too

Man remember how much cooler the MCIS era Silverfucks were compared to Gossamer? Gossamer was just silly ass guitar wankery.

Only one I ever listened to with any regularity was from the revival show in Paris. Any of the 20th Anniversary Tour ones were good though, when it was taken back to a more reasonable length.

The 20th anniversary versions are on a whole different level from the rest.. Any of those performances I would recommend.

gossamer is seriously the old man "know this road like the back of my hand" version of silverfuck i don't see how anyone can fall for this.

heavy metal machine works because he can tease a million songs into it and that's why silverfuck worked as well

For me Silverfuck was all about JACKBOOT!!

What's weird about the HMM > Rock On > Once in a Lifetime etc etc etc. is that it came in the middle or maybe about 2/3 of the way through the concert. The live energy to that series seemed pretty strong though, and not just endless wankery.

I really like Gossamer as a song, but not as an extended jam. It would be cool just as a slightly long-ish song but without the ridiculous self-indulgent interludes.

i think gossamer is one of the only times the self-indulgence worked in SP2...HMM was atrocious on those tours

In true SP fashion, Billy started the show I went to in 2007 (Atlanta) with an acoustic set. Even the one song he played that was well known ("Disarm") got a lukewarm response, but when the band kicked in to "United States" the place went fucking nuts. It reminded me of how he said the United Center show started with a slow energy, and erupted when "Glass' Theme" started.

Regardless, "United States" is a beast of a song and has been the highlights of the shows I've seen in 2007 and 2013. Too bad it was so severely neutered in the studio.

Oh, I was not referring to HMM during any SP2 or SP3 era show to be clear. Gossamer was one of the best songs ideas to come from anything post SP1 though. A little epic prog rock, a little classic metal...nice. That shit had real dynamics. It would be perfect cut of its most excessive/unnecessary bits but otherwise left intact as a fairly long song. for a proper recording.

it'll never happen. they played the song so often there simply must be a studio run-through , at the very least but i am confident we won't hear it.

Billy mentioned on Facebook that there are recordings of it with him and Jimmy dating back to around the time the band started touring again.

right? well, never say never. thinking about this though: what happened to Tulips and She Says from QaOS? no cleaned up demo of either has appeared on the reissue bonus discs. could it be that no better quality source exists or Billy and co didn't think the QaOS versions were up to polishing up any further? i'm puzzled as they both appear well-developed songs worthy of reissue inclusion. any ideas?

I don't have any doubt that Gossamer exists properly recorded somewhere. It's way too well thought out to not have been...

(Two other songs like that which come to mind instantly are Jackboot and STP.)

Mmm-hmm. And that's exactly why I think Gossamer also exists in the studio form somewhere...
