skipping the thread because i'm going to arrogantly assume that nobody else had the Deep Insights only i could have about this. cough.

anyway i tried okcupid a few years back because it seemed to offer an obvious benefit: if it worked as advertised, it'd greatly improve the signal to noise ratio of 'dating', whatever that nebulously means.

in practise i found that it just traded implicit, obscured bullshit for explicit bullshit: okcupid users answered questions and filled out their profiles in such a way as to select for the people they wanted to meet, rather than to honestly portray themselves. the system could still be easily gamed and the true filter – meeting people and talking to them – remained necessary.

IN CONCLUSION humanity is screwed, technology is a post-paleolithic boondoggle and we're all doomed to dissatisfaction and chaos
