Sadly, also the worst, most pretentious live show I've ever seen

They're not bad. Not the best. But I enjoy some of their stuff.

Well, for one, the show was held in a shitty techno club. There were like four opening acts and every single one was a Chromatics' member's side project. They ranged from dance music to jangle-pop and they were all totally fucking forgettable and bland and the sum of it lasted three damn hours before Chromatics went on as themselves.

The decor was faux vintage movie posters based on song titles on LED screens, absolutely everywhere. Next to the band, behind the band, all around the merch table (the LPS were at least cheap, I must say), but fuck, between that and the garish neon signs everywhere, the humidity, the venue being filled beyond capacity, I had a serious headache by the end of the night, at like 3:30 AM.

The actual Chromatics set was decentish, as I recall, but everyone seemed really drained and it was not at all worth everything I was putting up with to see them.

The whole thing seemed reeeeeeally self-congratulatory and was terribly off-putting. Not my vibe at all. I'll still check out whatever comes out because I enjoy the tunes, but I'm not attending any further shows.

Ah that sucks. Too bad it was a shitty experience.

I was pretty impressed that I was able to buy all three of their albums for a buck each. That's pretty cool.

I've been dick-riding Johnny Jewel's work since 2000 with Glass Candy. You can probably find posts by me championing either Night Drive or Kill For Love saying Chromatics are the only modern rock band that matters.

Beatbox by Glass Candy was the album that put him on the map. It came out the same year as Night Drive (both as tour CDR's) and the press picked up on them and went ape shit. Prior to that, he had been flying under the radar for 8-10 years.

The only incestous acts on the last tour was In Mirrors, Desire, and Chromatics. Desire is JJ's gf/babay mama (she's also the new manager of the label and she sucks super hard). In Mirrors are from Canada. Their LP "In Berlin" is pretty decent but they sucked live. Chromatics plays live to a backing track.

Johnny's not insane, he's just a control freak. That's why Dear Tommy has been delayed for 5+ years. He's also had 'relationships' with every female member on his roster.

I'm sorry none of you got to see Chromatics w/ Glass Candy circa 2008-2009. Wowee now that was special. They rarely play outside of extreme east or west coast or Europe so at least you can say you saw one of the only rock bands that actually matter.

Speaking of cults, did you know Johnny was raised in a religious cult in Texas?

A lot of people complain about finding the history or discography of Chromatics difficult to follow (which is understandable if you're looking at it backwards) so if I can help let me know.

pulled this earliest thread from 2012 http://forums.netphoria.org/showthre...ght=chromatics

Nite 12" was pre-Ruth but had Lena on vocals. You will probably love the song City Beds from the extended version of that 12"

There are also the demo cdrs "death kiss" and "in shining violence"

Did you listen to the extended version of the Cherry EP? The vinyl of Camera is different than the digital version.

There's also the Drumless version of Kill for Love which is a reimagined LP. The digital vs LP versions are totally different. That type of song later became titled (On Film).

Oh boy you are in for a treat. I discovered them a couple of years ago thanks to Twin Peaks but for some reason I never listened to more than Kill For Love. Then about a month ago I listened to Closer to Grey and Night Drive and, as they say in France, whalah!!

The vocals on that kill for love record are really something. Delivery seems disconnected from the lyrics, but in a way that’s so mysterious/mesmerizing. And the soundscapes are nice and cavernous, but varied as well. Yeah. This is genius stuff

Did I mention the "In The City" single? That was the first official release with Ruth and apparently the first one she sang.

The Healer/Witness 12" was just Adam and Johnny and the first indication of what their sound developed into. There's also an outtakes CDR from that session called "The Unreleased TMU Sessions" or something like that. From 2005. It's on YT.

There also were/are a bunch of unreleased songs available on Johnny's SoundCloud (IDK if they're there anymore) and a lot of the stuff available on soundtracks are different versions of the originals even though they're not labeled as such.

I have a giant .txt file compiling all the info but it's really boring. It's not uncommon for Chromatics to have 5 versions of the same song. SP vibes in that regard.

That being said, they really shit the bed the past few years. I blame appointing Megan as head of the label. Don't get me started.
