Default TIL: "Like old job" are the lyrics Corgan sings before the chorus in BWBW (for shame)

I was at my local Tower Records at midnight in 1995 to purchase MCIS. I've probably heard "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" 10,000+ times since then. Yet, today....27yrs later....I finally learned that "like old job" is what is sung right before the chorus.

"Like old job"??

I like that - and I'm ashamed that I would have gotten that wrong if it were a trivia question or something...

anyhow....

yes. the song makes religious refrences. billy has been doing this since the beginning. ''I am one as you are three''

what did you think the line was?

speaking of trivia:

I once had to do a trivia contest that was SP related at a job... me and my boss BOTH picked 'smashing pumpkins' to be our group name for a pumpkin carving contest. 'CAN'T HAVE TWO GROUPS WITH THE SAME NAME YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR GROUP NAME T&T, DON'T WANT PEOPLE MISTAKENLY GIVING YOU MY VOTES'
someoen suggest a trivia contest about SP, and the winner could keep the name.

'what astrological sign is billy'.... boss was a fucking idiot. LOL
I DESTROYED HIM!

and then at the final pumpkin carving contest reveal, turns out that nationally we were 8 different carving groups with the name...
Smashing Pumpkins from Montreal
Smashing Pumpkins from Oshawa
Smashing Pumpkins from Waterloo
Smashing Pumpkins from Lethbridge
Smashing Pumpkins from Toronto Group
Smashing Pumpkins from Toronto Sales
Smashing Pumpkins from Toronto Central
LOLS

his pumpkin carving actually won. turns out the boss guy was nuts for halloween more than the pumpkins.

I dunno what I thought it was. And I was thinking it was job (as in work) since the online sites I pulled up w/ the lyrics didn't have it capitalized.

I've always been more of a "how it sounds" person vs. someone who listens to the lyrics/potential meanings of songs....

Anyway - Eh - not sure I why I started this thread ha

If it makes you feel any better, I can't find any info about when exactly BWBW started being played on the radio or when the video came out, but from then to when I bought the album and read the lyric booklet, I thought the line was "like old Joe," and I couldn't figure out what famous Joe he was alluding to. I think I had it in my head that eventually I'd go to my friend's house, log in to the World Wide Web, find some Geocities fan page that explained the reference, and go back to playing TIE Fighter, which I fucking sucked at.

Does anyone know when the single actually started getting played on the radio, actually? Maybe I just can't figure out the right search terms, but all I'm finding is that the physical single release supposedly hit stores the same day the album did? That doesn't seem right? Does everything have to be such a big goddamn lie on the fucking internet?

I always heard the "Jesus was the only son for you" bit as "Jesus wasn't on this earth for you" and me and my friend still sing my version lol

i found this, first entry in the charts: https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot...ks/1995-10-21/

and this on page 43 lists bwbw as a "new release 16-22 october": https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Mus...1995-10-14.pdf

so looks like it was released in stores about 1 week before mcis was.

the promo was released at least 1 week before that though: http://www.spfc.org/songs-releases/d...l?discog_id=48

so maybe radio started playing it around 2 weeks before mcis got released?

I remember watching mtv and when Today was played the first time back in 93 or 94 I thought the “my belly stings” lyric was “my village stinks” because he hated the town he lived in and I could relate to that at 14. I was depressed and that lyric made me relate, and when we got the World Wide Web a few years later I looked it up and thought the website was wrong, not me.
