it sounds convincingly like a legitimate outtake from the BTW sessions, which in "Pumpkins world" would be like them convincingly releasing a new track that sounded like something off Machina

to be fair, that was pretty much Marchin' On, though the mix tied it pretty firmly to Shiny Stuff

yes, we are contractually obligated to parallel every god damn track released by other bands to Smashing Pumpkins - how do you think we get out of paying the yearly Netphoria fee???

It's true. New SP will have all three of our dudes - but have we seen ANY photos of James in the same room as BC working on SAOSBV3:MCIS2MTMOG3? Nope.

There's a lot to be said for these bands getting in the same room and writing songs together and being together. Same could be said for some recent Killers albums where they weren't together - it just feels pieced together.

It does feel like a logical step from BTW/Stadium. But I think it also has a bit of the same flavor from the last few Klinghoffer albums, which isn't a bad thing in my book. You could have made a really solid single album if you combined a bunch of cuts from I'm With You and The Getaway.

Had to toss on Marchin' On to remind me what that song was... and after a little bit, I decided to just go down to With Sympathy, which I still really dig.

Haven't agreed with a Pitchfork review as much as I do this one in some time:

This last paragraph, especially:

Blocking out its sentimental appeal, the music on Unlimited Love is tested by familiar pressures of late-era releases from successful rock bands: balancing the risk of self-parody with the need to live up to people’s nostalgia, knowing they’ve already written the music they’ll be remembered for but still wanting to keep the ride going. Like a lot of these types of albums, Unlimited Love is competent and comforting—its creators rarely try to grab your attention but never totally embarrass themselves either. (Well, maybe a little during the rap verses in “Poster Child.”) If you’re not on board, then there’s little reason to hop on now. But if you are, or ever have been, then one day you might find yourself like me, looking into some inquisitive, unsympathetic eyes, trying to articulate what you recommend about this ridiculous, once-radical band. Unlimited Love won’t be the first thing that springs to mind—but that doesn’t mean you won’t be glad it exists.

Same could be said for most of my favorite 90s bands that are still kicking - Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Radiohead to name three.
