It's a very cool and haunting melody indeed. Very 80's. That said, old programmable drum machines are only inevitably so good. It would sound better with a real drummer to replace the shitty machine fills (where it tends to show its technical limitations the most.)

i think its mainly the heavily effected guitar tone and dark, ethereal mood that give it the machina vibe. there aren't any drums and the meandering guitar solo feels kinda incongruous, but the chords themselves sound lik In My Body or something. epic loneliness, man. martian sunsets and shit.
