felt like listening to this song today and kind of had an epiphany on how complex and smart it is. like, the phrasing is all so odd and unexpected. how do you write songs like this.

That's a neat song

I'm always a sucker for that scratch sound on muted strings

i can't shake this song for a few days now.
it's not perfect but something about it captures that sensation of stinging insult, and absolute betrayal.

The way they deconstructed everything and made it as minimalist as possible it is the essence of rock

one of the best intro's of all time for sure. the orchestra playing that fucking refrain, so heavy and dark.
it's been way overplayed but i still love it.

i forgot how much i love the video, too. it's amazing how much you can get out of using so little.

I think nearly all great pop songs like these are the result of collaboration between a composer and a lyricist. I think it's hard to achieve something with as you say, surprising phrasing, outside of that model. In your favour, both Burt Bacharach and Hal David were Jewish...

i tend to agree!
it can yield spectacular results, because it makes both ends of the spectrum be as rounded and thought out as they could possibly be.

all of pet sounds is basically brian wilson composing tony asher lyrics.
also lots of incredible hebrew music with prewritten lyrics set to a tune.
got any more recs, vix?

Sorry I didn't return to this....I think the American standards are great for this - this is Classic Gershwin collaboration: (more Jews!!)

I said to my psychiatrist and psychologist in a "team meeting" of sorts, when I was 20, that I wished I was Jewish. They were like "Why??" and I was like, the art, man. I wanna make art like Jewish people.

My psychiatrist was like "Oh well I'd rather just make the art, and not be Jewish." and I was like DOH you really don't get it

Obviously I was wishing rather than converting, because an adult convert doesn't gain any artistic benefits. It's being raised from birth in the Jewish culture that does it.

My Presbyterian/Methodist culture comes close, for the academics and discipline and lack of sympathy from all the adults around you, and high expectations. But artistically we have what. Wesley? It's a dry well.

hey elph if you're getting into sly stone i recommend that recent compilation called "sly stone's flower" its a bunch of studio and bedroom demos that sly produced and performed on. the solo stuff of his features a rhythm ace drum machine so it sounds like suicide.
