Why?

Are you planning to get a record player, are you hoping to just flip it for profit, or is it just gonna sit there in your collection? (if you have one?)

I get the completionist angle, but if you can't listen to it I'm not sure I see the point.

Perhaps, I'm just curious really.

Sometimes people just like to have things, which is fair enough I guess.

48% Of People Who Buy Vinyl Don’t Even Listen To It, Study Finds [not an onion link]

Quote:
48% of people who actually buy vinyl don’t even listen to the records, according to just-released stats. But this gets even crazier: of the 48%, 41% have a turntable but choose not to use it, while 7 % don’t even own a turntable.
seems obscene to me -- but i mean how was this study even done? like, i don't listen to 99% of my records because i can only listen to one at a time yknow?

I'll get it ripped.

I'm disappointed by the community. AMM had two bonus vinyl tracks that only have mp3 rips circulating. we can do better. I'll do better for all of us.

This study never made sense. Vinyl make for popular gifts too. I will say I was in target the other day and was amazed to see a section that had books, vinyl and CDs. It was all for bullshit like Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift but it was interesting to see after I distinctly remember Target and Best Buy shutting all physical media down.

Is this reissue seriously already not coming bundled with digital downloads?

Eh, I guess they know that will eat into the later releases.

And whatever you do, don't forget to take photos of all the artwork and upload them here as well!
And remember, if you are taking photos in a darker room or at night, be sure to use the flash on your camera!

If it'll take you time to get it done, I can give it a shot once it shows up. Never ripped an LP before but it can't be too hard. My Audio-Technica does have the ability as I recall.

It was those two songs that sounded like ATUM leftovers right?

Yeah, they're up on YouTube and terrible. The usual non-personal vocal stylings Billy has chosen to use on newer records. I realized Billy sings in a way that sounds emotionally disconnected from the song. The way he used to sing, you could really feel it coming from a place deep down inside. Couldn't hide the vulnerability or anger behind his voice. But now, his newer songs/vocals sound so performative, like someone reciting someone else's poetry. There's this disconnect between the tone and delivery of voice from whatever he's trying to say. It more sounds like someone in a play reciting a song.

ok I listened to a few seconds of both those songs and realized I did know about them but had blocked them from my memory

they are blatantly from ATUM sessions and sound nothing like AMM

are fans so untr00 that they don't know about these little gems?

it'd be really nice to get a proper rip though. the high end on the cymbals really got raped by youtube trancoding.

Not a direct reply to you, but I've mentioned a million times I'm so terrified of publicly sharing personal CS or LP rips because someone might tell me my equipment is fucked up/wrong speed/wow&flutter/etc

My last rip of a C90 ran almost a minute over and I spazzed so hard I wanted to run through a wall, even though I probably just let the recorder run a tad longer than the actual duration or something stupid like that.

I remember being on pre-bandcamp experimental music message boards and there would be like 1 rip of a rare tape floating around and the artist would chime in like "you can download it if you want but the sound is all fucked up/it's a shitty rip"

Plus back then nobody was really a freak about lossless so they would be like 128 or 256 mp3 rips with tons of clipping hahaha

I kind of admire how hip-hop dudes will "sell" leaks. Some producer will be like "okay for $1000 I'll leak the first version of the song xxxxx with the first verse by xxxx instead of xxxx and the hi-hats in the chorus are still there with an uncleared sample"

I get that part of Corgan singing in a less expressive way is just aging. Nobody's voice sounds in their 50s the way it sounded in their 20s. All rock artists I've followed eventually had to cut out the throat-destroying screams and adopted a cleaner sound.

But that doesn't explain the shit that has nothing to do with aging, like his weird vibrato thing or how he seems to, IDK, chew his words or something.

I feel like part of that is pride. Like, he tried it, people shat on it, and he's like "no, you don't know better than I do" and now has to continue singing that way in order to avoid conceding to anybody's criticisms.

I have no way of knowing if that's what's actually going on in his head, but it's my hypothesis.

You know how some prominent people get, like, split into eras, because there is a clear rather than merely gradual distinction between their earlier and later work? Like how there's "Young Marx" and "Mature Marx?"

If Corgan becomes relevant enough after he passes on for anybody other than Netphorians to scrutinize the arc of his career, I think music writers will definitely notice there are at least two distinct Corgans musically. He writes songs differently, he sings differently, he writes lyrics differently… and not in the same gradual way that this happens for all artists. There is a schism.

Hmm, even though the transition into Corgan's current vocal style starts with Zwan, there is enough leftover OG-era Pumpkins DNA in Zeitgeist (you can hear how it's a follow-up to Machina) that I feel like true "New Corgan" starts with Teargarden. Those hippies did a number on him. The songwriting becomes something that feels more workmanlike and modular, I don't know how to explain it. And everything I've heard of his from them on just carries a bit of that vibe.

It sounds like the music of a guy who has built a standardized procedure, like "first, I write a chorus progression, and then I figure out the verse progressions, and then I write a vocal melody," etc etc., whereas early Pumpkins stuff sounds like he just let things go where they wanted to go, which probably led to a different order of operations each time.

I realize I'm speculating so much that I'm pretty much just acting like a schizophrenic who thinks he can read rock stars' minds now.

Way I see it, if I do it, it's probably going to be one of like five that surface within the first week, and they're all just holdovers, mine included, until it actually hits streaming. The important thing is not making people wait any longer than they have to, as well as giving myself a way to listen to it while I'm out, which is how I do most of my listening anyway.

If it sucks, it sucks, and at least I can say I tried. I'll make every effort to get it done right though, like I'll do a test rip of another LP beforehand to make sure it doesn't sound like shit at the very least. Wav, FLAC, 320k, whatever people want.

even if you dissect the OG era, Billy's voice changes pretty drastically from era to era.

DEFINITELY agree, workmanlike is the word that kept coming to mind. it doesn't help that everything's computer now. he's a boomer and like doing zoom calls with jimmy to work out a part. and as usual his favored ""modern"" production style sounds just so fucking....superfluous. why is it impressive that a big rich rock band can make their guitars sound more or less like every awful radio rock song? why is that good? why is that worth hearing? you're the smashing pumpkins!!! shut the fuck up!!

gordon ramsay works a 10hr shift at mcdonalds and it's good, sure, it has some cool drum fills in there, you can tell a deft hand seasoned the meat, but ultimately your takeaway is 'that was some pretty good mcdonalds' rather than 'a michelin star chef just cooked me an incredible meal'
