Compared to what? Different genres of music? Sometimes. Compared to older rock? Not as much, but still sometimes.

I'm sorry but I don't think the board is ready for this discussion. It's too painful

It's actually hilarious when you really stop and think about it and fully appreciate that rock and roll has actually become, in what seems very much to be real life, a genre dominated by virtual guitar amplifier simulators, guitars made to look relic'd straight from the factory, affectation and multilayer conscious\unconscious role playing, the list is endless.

It's just so truly bizarre at this point. Whatever this is, it's very very far from whatever it is rock n' roll was about when it first emerged.

50s-60s rock was very dangerous and sexy

70s-80s rock got big and dumb but with plenty of real artists keeping the torch alive (Neil Young, Stooges, Bowie, emergence of extreme metal like black and death)

90s grunge made rock feel a bit dangerous and sexy for the mainstream audience again, then it burned and out mainstream rock has been shit since 1998 or so

There is no rock and roll today, just pastiche bands

Acts like SWANS are vital but not sure if that’s rock and roll

i wish i were able to distill it into one moment

like for example the white stripes becoming one of the biggest bands in the world

i wish I could find a way to perfectly define the death of rock music.

are we not counting punk in rocknroll

70s, 80s punk/post-punk was wild

way way way moreso than the 90s, actually that's when it became phony

when labels could put an electric guitar in any skinny moptops hand and print money they could also afford to take risks on genuinely subversive artists

now your rockstars get home from their job at Best Buy and plug into a daw because their studio apartment has a noise curfew of 9pm

Yes. The fact that Wet Leg is currently the indie rock darlings says about the state of music. The album is derivative trash with horrible vocals and yet it gets crazy praise

Are we talking about mainstream rock, or rock in general?

Seeing as there are 10,000,000,000 rock bands out there, I don't know how anybody can make statements about rock music as a whole. Like, okay, maybe Imagine Dragons or whoever counts as a popular rock band right now is garbage, but I'm sure you'll find something you like on Bandcamp.

Is this what the death of a genre looks like?

it's what a genre not currently being the majority focus of the mainstream looks like and people not being able to handle it years down the line

but also, yes naturally the world would concede to Woodstock '99 and humble themselves to the notion they'd never top it

NEXT QUESTION PLEASE

Bandcamp is not a serious model for funding music, nor is streaming

you need actual money coming in

the bands scraping by are engaged in non-stop tours, still relying on the old fashion merch booth more than anything

Wait, are we discussing whether current music business models are lucrative for artists, whether interesting stuff is still happening in rock music, or whether rock music can still be subversive? I have no idea what question we're even debating here.

he's right more or less

obviously you could make little arguments here or there

but they would be overall meaningless
