I like it more than I did a month ago. I'd probably still give it around a 7/10 but I'd rather hear this than most of the dreck that is being released as rock music these days. When Aghori finishes, spotify keeps playing Fountains DC or whatever and these guys fucking suck

The album is front loaded for sure, but some of the softer songs are pretty good too. The only place the lyrics really get in the way is Who Goes There because it's a good song melodically but I can't get over I've never been to Kathmandu

i honestly love love love the kathmandu lyric. it has that zodeon vibe, he sings it well, it has that weird eccentric turn of the century '95 charm, it's evocative

i am annoyed about the zebras, i get the metaphor but it sounds so dumb

Kathmandu makes the song, it's a bit meh without it - so ridiculous it's kind of charming

Kathmandu is alright, but what really makes the song is the ”say you will say” parts. Catchy as hell after a few listens.

Never understood the complaints about the production. The album sounds so polished and the guitars are massive. Maybe I would agree that the drums could sound more “live”.

To me 1 month later sounds worse.

The excitement factor wore off and I reduced by grade from 4.5/10 to 3.5/10. It's a scientific scale

Who Goes There is pretty good. I think the melody is decent, and there is definitely old school James parts that have been missing for many years. I like the constants key changes.

Murnau is the other one I like. It’s different, but I find myself singing it in my head here and there sometimes. Decent album closer, and I like the emotion of “And here I fought for you!”

The others are so-so. My biggest gripe is his vocals, and all that shaky vibrato and weak consonants that he just can’t stop anymore. Someone on here postulated that maybe he has a hearing problem , and is struggling to hear his own pitch. It’s kind of an interesting possibility… he does sound like he constantly fishes for the correct note at the beginning of phrases… leading to shaky, dropped consonants.

The other thing I don’t like is that the whole album sounds so Pro Tools based. Sounds like they plugged all their guitars directly into a laptop. There’s no breath to the space they’re in. Sounds super sterile. Jimmy’s drums sound way over produced, albeit better than Atum. No life to any of it. They definitely recorded all the parts separately and then used computers to polish it all up. Pretty much the opposite of what Jimmy professes to hate when he does his drum clinics in recent years.. so, unfortunate irony.

I’m interested to see where they go next. I’d like an album that sounds like a band again, and not a computer band. This one took a step in the right direction, but only a baby step. I want more life.

This is my biggest gripe too. The songs are pretty good but the elements that make them up are pretty basic and easily discernible. And it all fits together a bit too neatly. There’s no humming broken guitar like in Arms of Sleep. No ghostly “yeh heh” vocal sample like in 1979. No hairspray or scissors. I want to hear more mysterious sounds, more idiosyncratic choices. There’s no character or flaws here. Ram27 aptly described it as sounding like a foo fighters record

I had a couple songs from this show up on my "recommended for you" Spotify playlist.

I had to skip them a few seconds in. It's possible that the songs themselves are all right, but it's hard to listen to them long enough to even decide that when the vocals are what they are. I find it unpleasant to listen to.

I know this criticism would probably sound funny to an outsider of the fanbase. "The guy from Smashing Pumpkins always sung weird. Lots of people always found his voice annoying and grating. Why it is suddenly a problem for you?"

But as we Netphorians understand, he went from singing cool weird to bad weird. And it's such a major part of the music that I can't really just look past it and look at the other merits of the song. Corgan himself acknowledged that that whether or not one likes his singing tends to make or break whether they like the band. And he's right. I can't like anything they record of he sings like that on it.

I am curious as to how casual listeners who aren't as invested in the band or attached to older material and haven't followed his trajectory would feel about the vocal differences. Like, if I showed them a classic song and a modern one, do you think they would immediately notice the difference in quality, or would they go "Hmm these both sound like rock songs by a guy with a nasally voice?"

And god, the singing just gets worse with time. Zwan and Zeitgeist are where his new vocal style began, and it was much inferior to the classic stuff, but I could live with it. It didn't completely negate the quality of the better songs. Now, it's just at the level where it's just disqualifying.

This album progressively gets worse and worse every time I hear it. It's pretty boring and there is little to no resemblance to the original songs, as was promised.

It's great. Far better than Machina, which isn't a very meaningful statement, as Machina was a dogshit record. But still, it's great.

Did you mean to post this in the Machina 2 thread?

Because it sounds like you’re saying Aghori Mhori Mei is better than Machina, which is a statement so absurd I want to laugh out loud hmmm-HA!

You won't either. That's how I was. A few listens the week it came out then zilch. I just don't have any interest.

Meanwhile in the last week I listened to Gish (twice). That's a very easy record to go back to (I just got a copy of the 1994 remaster on vinyl. It sounds great though with a fair bit of surface noise, but for the most part it's fine for a 30 year old record; it's just when it goes quiet - and it gets really quiet in places on Gish).

I do not listen to it regularily, cause his voice and singing gets extremely annoying after three songs
