Bring the Light and That’s the Way studio versions I also enjoy. Though obviously live versions are almost always superior.

That's the Way would be great if it didn't have the overbearing Billy vox in the chorus "THAT'S THE WAAAAAAY"

They should use the AOL session when releasing the reissue (that will eventually come out before Machina) and pretend this was always the album.

Last time I saw SP was Zeitgeist era show.. that was right before the band nosedived.. but ATUM is the worst piece of crap I've ever heard before.. so I'm slightly curious what the follow-up sounds like.

ATUM is worse than teargarden?

interesting, I consider ATUM many times more enjoyable than anything from the teargarden era.

It surprises me that anyone’s ever gotten thru Atum. It’s one of the more exhausting, challenging listens ive ever undertaken, in any genre. It’s the dry, up front, gasping/croaking vocals that intimidate me the most. How does anyone listen to it? Let alone three discs of it? It was bad enough trying to get through Cyr. No desire to do that again

I don't think there is anyone who has, besides maybe the Billster.

I did. Still haven't felt the need to do so again, but at the time I wanted to give it a fair shot as an album rather than song by song. As below;

Some honest observations:
  • The opening track (called Atum?) is cool and for a moment I thought I had misjudged this
  • It's much better when you listen to the whole thing in one go, rather than the painful song by song method we had to suffer through
  • I have no idea what the story is, except for numerous call backs to Zero, one reference to "Deus ex Machina", and Clementine being important (I assume)
  • The rock songs on the album are actually very well placed, as just when the clown fuckery or the quieter songs were getting tiresome, one of the rock songs would be there to bring back some energy
  • With the above point, Spellbinding is a good song, but only after having to suffer through Intergalactic and what seems like an eternity of ZERO SAVES ZERO
  • Katie is all over the record and she doesn't need to be, some of her parts are okay and with that it should definitely have been a "less is more" approach
  • Billy's vocals are way up front but in a full album sitting it isn't so bad, whereas song by song it sticks out like a sore thumb. Lyrics are unintelligible for a lot of it
  • We've said enough about the synths and many of them sound like a child plonking on the keys
  • One of the quieter songs somewhere in the middle really reminded me of TheFutureEmbrace and I appreciated that
  • Hooray is still stupid, doesn't fit, and is pointless
  • I don't know which Act I prefer as they all had good and bad moments
  • It's definitely much better than CYR
  • It is a SLOG to get through at 2 hours 20 minutes and I really doubt anyone will be doing it more than once or twice
  • Like many others I may pick out some songs to put on a various playlist, but the chances are it'll just be the "rock" ones as the clown fucks and quiet songs will just sound ridiculous out of context (as they did when we heard them)
  • I'm glad I gave it a fair crack, I enjoyed parts, but I was glad when it ended (and Of Wings is a terrible ender)

tl;dr it's better than you think, but that's it.

I haven't listened to it all the way through in a good while but I did a few times around release. Ever since I kinda pick whichever of the 3 acts I'm feeling like listening to the most and just listen to that as a single album. I think the songs really benefit from being listened to within an album context like that, but I don't usually have time to listen to more than one act in any single sitting.

abso-fuckin'-lutely

some of you overstate the badness of TG because of the shock factor of getting something that... jarring following ZG/a Pumpkins revival that at least had Joliet Jim on board

but in reality, it at the very least gave us a handful of decent tunes, and in terms of production value it sounds like fuckin' Gish compared to Awtum

i think so.. I mean they're both fucking terrible.. it's turd sandwich vs. douche.
I would honestly say ATUM is worse because we were promised the sequel to MCIS and Machina.. and listening to ATUM.. the disappointment was huge. I was expecting good songs.. not a bucket of santorum.. ok in retrospect 1 or 2 good songs.. and 98 santorum songs

so same setlist every night, so far, right?

i wonder what it'll look like when they're playing festivals later, and won't get over 2 hours to play. they'll have to cut 35-40 minutes.

Big news: BC drinks Fiji water. The Voss days are over. More as we get it.

where did this thing about "oh you want the hits? ok we'll play the HITS and make a REAL big deal about it" come from

i don't remember that being an issue since 2008

is this just some kinda delayed b0llsack gratification?

It’s some weird marketing strawman, Bill himself started it by giving an interview where he said he wouldn’t play the hits if he felt like it, to plant stories where it was claimed he wouldn’t play the hits, so then Corinne posts loads of memes emphasising how hits heavy this setlist is.

Fuck knows business model in action.

i had seen the initial interview

but then this gets posted today, and it seems like a modern-day spin on the "no one thought this was a 3.5 star record"

was there ever even a true 3.5-star awarder?

if he mixed the tone and tenor of these shows w the setlists of the 2008 era it'd be practically perfect

Does seem like he has caved on that whole water subject. He was Voss only there for a few years, then he was Essentia only for a few years - when I saw him last year he had some Fiji in LA, which is of course a place where one could get a glass Voss or an Essentia of course.

Since these setlists ain't changing this tour, maybe that's what we need to be tracking?

Speaking of which - why don't they mix up the setlist at all? Is it laziness? Fear of messing up and looking dumb? It isn't a SAOSB Tour visual element excuse any longer... so what gives? They are surely talented enough musicians who wrote thoes songs and they could/should be able to mix it up... but they just don't. And it sucks.
