I was meaning to watch that, and then I forgot all about it till now. I like the Wes Anderson films that I've seen so I'm sure I'll give it a look.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: A. This movie has no business being as good as this is; fucking shocked at how much I enjoyed this. It's funny as hell.

Air: I dunno, B-? Fun to watch but not particularly memorable, and all the conflict (Nike employee tries to convince the CEO over and over to put all their money on Jordan) keeps getting resolved with the CEO saying "Ah, fuck it, sure" after vehemently opposing it for what seem like very good reasons. This happens three or four times.

I keep thinking about it, more than I’ve ever thought about his other films. A kinda slow burn. And so slow to watch, too

Oppenheimer. I saw it because I enjoyed The Prestige. Not sure about how any of the history stacks up but it was a good spectacle at the cinema I thought. Some nice explosions. We saw it with my parents on Fathers’ Day and it was worth the price of admission.

Not sure if I should watch Ladybird before I see Barbie. I tried to watch Little Women on the plane and did not enjoy it at all. But I LOVED Frances Ha. But maybe that was the Baumbach influence

I really want to like Greta Gerwig’s work

Me too, but that’s only because I’m so happy re-watching the ones that have already come out

I’m a fee paying member of the Wes Anderson kool aid drinkers’ society

guys i'm never watching an Ari Aster movie again

no particular reason, at least none that i'm going to tell you

it's just a cool little attention-grabbing thing to say that'll probably ruffle feathers for no reason

hehe

I know quite a few people who don’t enjoy Wes Anderson films - too contrived, characters lack emotional depth, etc

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Haven’t seen this since it came out 20 years ago, I feel so old writing that.

It had definitely aged - it almost watches like a stage play put on by an amateur dramatic society. I re-watched it because I remembered it being funny and I still laughed this time.

They are human cartoons. All style no story. And the acting is always stiff andifeless

I can definitely appreciate that viewpoint

I love them anyway. I think it’s just his niche, a weird genre that explores the human experience somehow through experiences that no human would ever have, in places that don’t exist except in some oversimplified version of our world that only exists in the minds of children and in the memories of childhood

I have an unlimited supply of reasons Wes Anderson makes great films that would only satisfy someone who already thought that

B? Really enjoyed watching it but I haven't really thought about it at all afterward

A. Absolutely laughed me arse off, maybe harder than I have at anything else this year, but I didn't think the conflict with the bullying family was interesting or even necessary.

I watched Disney's Pinocchio from 1940 recently again. Totally surreal to think that movie is 83 years old now, and knowing how the Disney company blew up into one of the world's ugliest conglomerates.

Before his pictures were gutted and turned into a corporate recipe for dollar printing, they really were quite amazing to look at. Moving, breathing art pieces. Pinocchio in particular is fairly singular in its non linearity. There are multiple different villains; the movie takes place in all sorts of wildly different places (Gepetto's shop, a traveling circus, pleasure island, a whale's insides); gets very nightmarish and scary for an animated picture. Very atypical and doesn't follow any of the rigorous molds Disney have since so famously adhered to in every single picture. Walt Disney himself was a true visionary and a fascinating character.

Also the attention to detail and workmanship across the whole film is staggering compared to anything more modern. I just really miss the times where people legitimately placed their whole personal integrity on the art they made, and spent years making something that truly aspired to be as perfect as it could be, rather than just farting out endless titles out into a world that will forget it all anyway three months after it was released.

put on The Big Lebowski the other night and was amazed at how much I had forgotten about it

also felt like I was finding it way funnier than I had previously, and at some point realized it had potentially been over a decade since my last viewing

A!

also, The Killer was good
