Odd how? It's a formulaic mid-tempo song with a dull, obvious chorus that will not offend anyone.

I like how you went from "fantastic" to "isn't a bad song", by the way. Seems as if your enthusiasm for the track has come a bit, no?

No it's a great song, it just doesn't have that loud fast feel that a signature RHCP single would have.

lol, keep nitpicking. Dani California is far more radio friendly than this song, and it is a pretty fast toe tapping song.

It's just an odd choice for a single. Great song, but I'm sure there are some more radio friendly songs on the upcoming album.

The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie is an awesome song that helps fill the beef of an album. A 5 minute funky jam.

What? No, man. Dani California plods at like 95 bpm and even then Chad Smith sounds reluctant to be playing his drums at all. For a radio "rock" single it is a damn slow tune.

Yes, really. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is up around 110, "American Idiot" at 180+, hell even 1979 runs at 127. You're just too much of a goddamn moron to know the difference between "fast" and "lots of guitar notes"

Keep nitpicking buddy. You can't deny facts, and the facts here are that it's a great song but just not a good choice for a single. Just wait for the remaining tracks on the album and you'll see.

What makes this a great song, specifically?

Not sure if this is worthy of a new thread or not - but there's been some Californication talk in this thread, so thought I'd toss it here.

Have any of you heard the unmastered version of Californication? Since it's one of those albums that is always used as a reference point in the whole loudness/clipping/mastering/whatever war, it's an interesting listen.

In case you want to check it out:

whoever doesn't like this isn't a true fan, like what were you expecting? Another Californication? Its already been done so it can't be done again, lower you're expectations a smidge and tell me what isnt so great about this beautiful song. I've been dancing around the fuckin house for an hour now!!

it starts as just sort of funky typical rhcp (i say typical not having listened to them for a decade) but i couldn't even make it through the chorus once. wow, that is about as lame as it gets.

assuming this isn't a joke, i couldn't tell much of a difference. still sounds terrible. i like some of the songs on this record though. i'd like to know exactly what they did to make it sound so amazingly shitty, it's just like, flat, and i dunno, like they played it through a tiny crappy speaker and then recorded that for the master or sth

i find it annoying to have to type that whole word
s o m e t h i n g
it just seems too long for a word that basically means nothing. at least nothing looks cool.

No joke - it's pretty evident on certain songs. Around the World right when it starts to really hit is the most clear example I could find.

That said, it's still far from how that album SHOULD sound. Still one of the most mind-boggling examples.

californication is the last listenable RHCP album

I wish they would just break up and then Ataxia could reform and play arenas

i always want to like rhcp but it's been tough. same with the recent sp and pearl jam stuff. though pj/sp have a lot more good stuff than rhcp. i like the whole silly lyrics thing sometimes.

GOOD GOD
WHERE'S MY SLEIGH NOW!
GOOD GOD
DE NIRO'S INSANE NOW!

now i lay me down to sleep, i pray the funk will make me freak
if i should die before i waked, allow me lord to rock out naked!

aand so on

I heard the new single by Bush ( who also lost their guitarist from the 90s) on the radio a couple of days ago. Sounds really boring. At least the new Chili Peppers sounds different from what they've done before.

Never said anything about redundancy. Metal has been much more exciting and interesting to me in the last 4-5 years than any other genre I listen to. This new RHCP song, like a lot of the current modern rock (or whatever it is referred to these days) just comes off as uninspired and insipid (to me).

Hopefully this is about bands that are well past their expiration date that are still putting out material (S.P., S.T.P., Bush, RHCP etc.) rather than modern rock in general.

For the most part, yes. Nothing new I've heard has really been that great either, but I kind of attribute that to getting older and not being as ravenous for new music as I used to be. I'm always up for recommendations of course, but that's for another thread.

Back on topic, though. Yeah, the new RHCP song sucks.

I really like the verses and the outro. But the chorus is pretty bad.

Well there it is ladies and gentlemen. If CW can find something to dislike about a piece of music, it categorically must suck harder than anything has sucked before.
