They’ve done a good job trying to legitimize her as an artist and give credibility by shouting “she writes her own songs!!” from the mountaintops but I still think it’s a “write a word, get a third” scenario with her mostly. It’s interesting to me how Gen Z doesn’t care about credibility at all. In my book if you’re hawking Capital One or anything on a television commercial every five minutes you are out of the discussion, but I’m also much closer in age to cynical Gen X’ers. Y’all kids have fun.

Eh, I'm not big on pop music, but I don't think somebody who makes their money by (checks notes)—making accessible music that people like—is on the same level as mega-corporations that pollute, bust unions, steal water, contribute to the obesity epidemic, bribe politicians to influence public policy, etc. Maybe when I was in high school, I got in my high horse about how much I hated pop and how I listened to oh-so-more sophisticated rock music or whatever, but now I just don't really care if other people enjoy a thing I do not enjoy. Whatever floats your boat, even if it's not my cup of tea.

I mean, the Pumpkins are an arena-playing band that topped charts in the '90s. I've met plenty of insufferable hipsters who would have the same attitude toward them as you have toward T. Swift. I'd bet Steve Albini would liken SP to McDonald's and brainless blockbusters.

Taylor writes a lot of her songs.. A lot of them credited to just her. Most of her last record is credited to her and jack antonoff.. so it’s not a team.

As far as if that legitimizes one’s art over another, I think it’s a weak argument. Her influence is wide spread and for the most part it’s been a positive influence. She’s given voice to a lot of young girls/women over the past decade and a half, to a point where I’ve seen parents thanking her for the positive life lessons she puts in her songs.

I dunno. I’m not annoyed by her. And I’m an older dude. Billy writes his own songs and we rip on him daily so what’s it matter who writes what as long as it’s a killer song?

Point is moot though as she’s proven many times she can write a good song by herself.
