Lightbulb What is the first music you bought in each format? (cassette, CD, MP3, vinyl, etc.)

minidisc, whatever

for me it was:

Cassette: Milli Vanilli - All Or Nothing (1988)
CD: Aladdin: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1992)
MP3: don't remember
Vinyl: The Smashing Pumpkins - Live At The Viper Room (2021)

they just released a 30-year commemorative version of All of Nothing and it was fun to revisit

I wish I could remember any of this shit. "What's the first album you bought" comes up every now and then in conversation and I honestly have no fucking idea.

All I know is I've never bought a vinyl.

Cool

Cassette: This is tough 'cause my sister and I were listening to a lot of the same music at the time, and I think she usually bought the tapes. The first I distinctly remember being mine was P.M. Dawn's Of The Heart, Of The Soul, and Of The Cross: The Utopian Experience (August '91). She wasn't a fan.
CD: Got a CD player really late in the game; first thing I got was, I'm pretty sure, the Lull EP ('91 I think but I bought it years later)
MP3: Again, really late; the farthest my iTunes account goes back is The Carters' EVERYTHING IS LOVE in 2018. Paying for mp3s, lol
Vinyl: I think Feist's Let It Die (2004)

first mp3 I remember downloading was "Blue" by Eiffel 65

first CD I remember buying was the Gorillaz s/t

don't know if I ever personally "bought" a cassette as a child but I'm pretty sure I had at least one of the Space Ghost/Cartoon Planet soundtracks

first vinyl I remember buying was In Rainbows at an RH concert in 2008 - girls asked if it was a "calendar" which, in retrospect, would've been pretty cool

Cassette - Weird Al "Even Worse"

Vinyl - ELO "New World Record"

CD - Ace Ventura 2 soundtrack

Cassette: Nirvana - Nevermind

CD: Nirvana - Nevermind (I began buying music right at the end of cassette and CDs started catching on. Rebought all the albums I had on cassette,)

Vinyl: The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die (My dad had a decent record collection, but I was never was a fan of vinyl. I preferred CDs. I only got this record since it was part of a bundle deal.)

my aunt brought me to get my copy of Marshal Mathers LP around '01 or '02 and the lady in the record store stopped us in what I can only describe as a near-panic to make sure I had the edited version

don't worry though I had a friend who gave me his explicit copies of all the 'nem CDs not long after

merry christmas

Back when Mark Wahlberg was Marky Mark
This is how we used to make the party start
We used to mix ‘hen with bacardi dark
And when it kicks in you can hardly talk
And by the sixth gin, you gon’ probably crawl
And you’ll be sick then and you’ll probably barf
And my prediction is you’ll probably fall
Either somewhere in the lobby or the hallway wall

my parents bought me the first RATM album on one of the Canary Islands when I was 15. The shop owner tried to convince them/me to buy a Brian Adams album instead

Cassette - Michael Jackson - Dangerous - absolutely no idea why I wanted/asked for this, but I did for Christmas and got it.

CD - Mellon Collie - Bought it with my own money. Didn't even have a CD player but knew I needed it and would figure out where to find a CD player at after the fact. Changed my life, no exaggeration.

Vinyl - Great question. I think it was Reckoning by REM. If not that, it was Siamese or Pisces. Once I realized that I liked music and that the album art was bigger and different sometimes with records, I just started gobbling them up on eBay for no other reason than to collect them. That was when vinyl was still cheap, so I got a ton of records that ended up being super expensive later for cheap.

MP3 - I really didn't buy MP3s. Never saw the point - why not just buy the CD and rip it? Higher quality. There were only a few that I resorted to buying, I think maybe the first/one of the very few was "Timebomb" by Beck. Great tune.

Cassette: Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You
CD: Pet Shop Boys - Very
Vinyl: Supertramp - Crime of the Century (bought because my dad listened to it, and nostalgia)
MP3: Probably downloading Machina 2!

I think I've bought very few albums on MP3...because what's the point? Maybe a single or something perhaps.
