Have you ever listened to The Melvins? They defy genre. Hell, they invent genres in their free time. You just pissed all over both of those bands in a vain attempt to compare the flagship band of the genre you despise to something legitimate.

down tempo
lots of effects, feedback, distortion on the guitars
lots of guitar solos
jam band feel, most say heavy metal inspired but i think hendrix and neil young are HUGE for grunge
overly dramatic vocals - although this is ironic because mostly grunge had disdain for dramatics because hair bands but vedder and cornell are both huge hams
angst filled lyrics addressing white boy pain
oh yeah, from seattle...a scene is a scene is a scene, dudes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grunge#Characteristics

wiki says they take inspiration from both punk and heavy metal but i feel grunge is more about the sludge guitar mixed with guitar heroics a la hendrix and young and yeah heavy metal esp in the case of soundgarden which i think is the most METAL of the grunge bands

what are you even talking about, i can't even deal with how little sense this makes

are you saying that nirvana ripped off the pixies and the melvins and that disparages the pixies and the melvins? i thought i was disparaging nirvana

I'm saying your comparison of Nirvana to the pixies and the melvins is dumb.

pixies and the melvins were much better.

no, i'm just not going to waste time on someone who can't write legible sentences and is set in arguing that grunge doesn't exist and pearl jam, AIC and soundgarden don't have similar qualities

you still can't fucking read either. my comparison of nirvana was dumb? did you know it came from KURT COBAIN?

how the fuck do you not hear that? you don't hear that nirvana is basically a mashup of melvins and the pixies? where do i say they weren't great? what the hell is your point? seriously can you please clarify this for me? "they were much better" no shit man, that's why i'm saying nirvana basically is derivative of both of them. seriously what

I'm sorry, Trots.

Will you forgive me?

I didn't mean to start an argument.

you don't neccesarily have to sound exactly like another band to be part of the same "movement" or whatever i mean i think slowdive and mbv are pretty far apart but they're still "shoegaze" are they not

(admittedly i've listened to mbv a hell of a lot more than slowy d but still)

i mean maybe for one who only or largely listens to the rock to the point of micro-obsessing about certain things like exact virtuosity/metal influence of guitar solos and whatnot but i think when you add alice in chains to the equation it's kind of like the missing link from stuff like well, the bands you mentioned and nirvana

being influenced largely by melvins and pixies doesn't change that, it just distinguishes them a bit more

oh i don't micro-obsess over detail in that regard...to me it's basically cultural geography and it's nice to make maps

the generally accepted definition of grunge is that it takes both punk and metal elements and ultimately maybe nirvana is one end of that spectrum and the other is soundgarden

getting into long winded arguments about something this dumb is pointless. i said my piece and i don't need to win.

Except that Alice in Chains is obviously on the extreme end of that spectrum.

And hey Trots... can we just agree that we disagree, man? I ain't trying to stir up shit, just being the devil's advocate.

I think Nirvana was grunge and that grunge is totally a genre as much as any other genre but they were the only good grunge band because they leaned way more towards Punk than other bands in that scene.

Kurt would play solos that would just be the verse of his song sped up and played an octave higher or so pretty much making fun of his own song the same way you mock someone. So awesome
