After doing my best "singing in the old way" along with a few AMM songs, I switched over to MCIS and rocked out to Jellybelly through To Forgive. I normally use Spotify, so I compared the quality of the tracks back-and-forth with decent headphones vs. the Apple Music lossless format. Spotify is definitely louder... to get the same volume on the Apple version of a given track, I had to up my phone's volume 2 clicks. I'm not an audiophile, but I didn't hear much difference in the vocals between the services. *shrug* |

The only reason I find myself occasionally listening to AMM still is to get a Jimmy / James fix, their input is the actual highlight of the album. There could still be a great SP album in James & Jimmy but I think we all know why it’s never going to happen.

The louder something is at a given volume, when it should be the same on both services, is the issue. The "loud at any volume" approach to mastering for Spotify is really what's causing the issue here. What you are perceiving as "louder" is actually a mastering and EQ process to push everything to the max.
And that's what gives Spotify that harshness and metallic feel in a lot of cases. But it's also why Spotify is winning in terms of customers; to many people loud = better and they sound good coming out of their single bluetooth speaker. Go look up a MBV album. You'll notice how quiet it is. Kevin Shields said that if you want the music louder "turn up your volume". Last edited by eviltimeban : 08-30-2024 at 09:49 AM. |

Crazy to think, we got a good Eminem album and a good Smashing Pumpkins album within a month of each other!

Think it's Sighommi getting daily airplay on 6music in the UK. For reference this is the first time I've heard SP getting on regular rotation.
