bob dylan doesn't have a limited vocal range...
he's sung in at least 4 different vocal styles over his 60's and 70's albums

ranges and styles are different...range is mainly to do with tone and pitch. i have never heard bob sing falsetto or in a low register, successfully attempt a scream or a hoarse "rock" voice (not that he needs to by any means, but couldn't hurt to try?)

i know he wrote mr.tambo and i didn't say he was a limited character, i said i like alot of his music and respect him. but the public perception of him has really been blown out of all proportion i think, he's not as great as everyone wants to believe.

the public perception of everybody is blown out of all proportion. that's what mass media are all about. but you condemn something you obviously know nothing about in an unnecessarily bloated manner. if i didn't know shit about bob dylan i'd be quiet. and don't tell me you've ever really listened to more than one bob dylan album all the way through.
and yes, his latest output bores the hell out of me but so does - how dumb this comparison is, but you seem to always come back to it - billy corgan's.

Dylan is fuckign awesome.
I play him all the time. Friends often get in my car and say, ‘What, Dylan, again?’

Har har. Good stuff.
His older work, for me personally, will always be my favourite.

Still love the original All Along the Watch Tower, and Like a Rolling Stone.

And putting Dylan into context of when and what he was writing also helps understand why there is such a loyal fan base. This is coming from a 23 year old South African, but hey.

Modern Times is excellent. It's fairly obvious you have never heard it. My pop has been a fan since the 60s and Modern Times is the only contemporary Dylan album I've heard him talk about, or for that matter, own. Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited are two of the quintessential rock albums of all time. I've listened to both of those albums all the way through, as well as Modern Times. I don't understand why you think that is totally impossible that someone in their 20s wouldn't find classic rock music to be boring and not worth listening to. I'm not a huge Dylan fan or anything but there is a reason those albums are highly regarded, and Modern Times is a great listen.

Stop comparing him to Bolly. Dylan's lyrics make a whole hell of a lot more sense than his. I mean what the fuck does this mean:

"To runaround kids in get-go cars
With vaseline afterbirths and neon coughs
Galaxies full of nobodies
Giving us the farewell runarounds
I took a virgin mary axe to his sweet baby jane,
lost my innocence to a no good girl, scratch my
face with anvil hands, and coil my tongue around a bumblebee mouth
and I give it all back to you"

Give me a break Isle.

Your "sellout" criticism has to do with him going electric, which is a dumb criticism in the first place and was only levied at him by dumb ass folk music fanatics who are now dead to history.

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

With your mercury mouth in the missionary times,
And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes,
And your silver cross, and your voice like chimes,
Oh, who among them do they think could bury you?
With your pockets well protected at last,
And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass,
And your flesh like silk, and your face like glass,
Who among them do they think could carry you?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace,
And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace,
And your basement clothes and your hollow face,
Who among them can think he could outguess you?
With your silhouette when the sunlight dims
Into your eyes where the moonlight swims,
And your match-book songs and your gypsy hymns,
Who among them would try to impress you?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

The kings of Tyrus with their convict list
Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss,
And you wouldn't know it would happen like this,
But who among them really wants just to kiss you?
With your childhood flames on your midnight rug,
And your Spanish manners and your mother's drugs,
And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs,
Who among them do you think could resist you?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

Oh, the farmers and the businessmen, they all did decide
To show you the dead angels that they used to hide.
But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side?
Oh, how could they ever mistake you?
They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm,
But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm,
And with the child of a hoodlum wrapped up in your arms,
How could they ever, ever persuade you?
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row,
And your magazine-husband who one day just had to go,
And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show,
Who among them do you think would employ you?
Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole
With your holy medallion which your fingertips fold,
And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul,
Oh, who among them do you think could destroy you
Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

good idea to post lyrics, boys

Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess.
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy,
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me.
I can't help it if I'm lucky.

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts.
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at,
I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that
Sweet lady.

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin' south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like.
There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin' out of a boxcar door,
You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars
After losin' every battle.

I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin' me see stars.
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies.
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzin' around your eyes,
Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb,
Blowing through the curtains in your room.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart.
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped,
What's good is bad, what's bad is good, you'll find out when you reach the top
You're on the bottom.

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes
don't look into mine.
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building
burned.
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime
turned Slowly into autumn.

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull,
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin' I was somebody else instead.
Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy,
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
And all your ragin' glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free,
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me.
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats,
Blowing through the letters that we wrote.
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves,
We're idiots, babe.
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

I can understand people who just do not like Dylan but to not at least respect him for what he has done for music is just retarted. That's right; it's retarded with a T because that's how dumb it is to say something like Billy is better than Bob Dylan because his voice is less nasally or some shit. Please.

Modern Times, Love and Theft, and Time Out of Mind have all been good to excellent and considering his stuff from the 1960s and 1970s still puts so much that has come before and after it to shame to tell you something.

Admittedly, I may be just a little biased though.

the vocal comparison was a minor suggestion. i said i don't understand how someone like dylan can get praised for effectively retreading the same musical ground for 50 years, when there are musicians like corgan who are constantly creative and keep evolving succesfully, who are brilliant songwriters in their own right, but don't get the attention they deserve, or even get slated. i know its ridiculous to be comparing bc to dylan anyway, but relatively speaking, i think it would be pretty easy to argue that corgan has done more for music (not necessarily words/vocals though) in 18 years than dylan has done in 50.

How many albums of his have you actually listened to? Two? And did you really listen to them or did you just sort of put them on so if asked later you could say you've heard them? Even if you just listened to his stuff from the 1960s, there's a lot of variation in just that one decade and he took a fucking break for three years of it. I'm not saying Corgan is devoid of talent but saying he has done more for music than Dylan is just mindboggling. I mean, no offense, but you have got to be fucking kidding me. I'm not saying everything Dylan has turned out has been golden by any means. Hell, he turned out a lot of crap in the 1980s and has even admitted this. The way you're talking about Corgan makes it seem like you just eat up anything he churns out though. If Bob Dylan recorded a fart in studio and named it something pretentious, I would say it sucked but somehow I think if Corgan did that you'd say it was better than the last best thing he did and that makes me sad.

Dylan "plugging in" at Newport did more for music in that one event than Corgan has done and will do for music, ever.

You've fucking lost it man. Off the deep end, you are.

i have heard some of his albums. blood on the tracks, rolling stone, time out of mind, love and theft most recently, and other songs. let's make it clear that i like dylan, he's certainly a genius and his lyrics are indisputably some of the best ever. i also appreciate that being a man of his own time and place, his influences are different to someone like bc's. but whereas dylan was more of an interpreter of traditional music (that have been repeated and rehashed ceaselessly since their inception, with little innovation or new creative approach), there are modern bands and songwriters who can take old music, modern genres and even invent genres and still throw them at you in a different way. i use the pumpkins as a prime example of this. the pumpkins' songs reference old and recent music, yet they sound like nothing else by anyone, virtually no two of their songs even sound anything alike, sometimes their songs aren't even about anything at all, and yet a they somehow make a more profound impact on some people's lives than any other band/songwriter. enough impact to make them type bombastic stupid shit like this. so what's the secret ingredient? billy probably said it best himself: "good music obliterates any concept of genre". its not hard to try doing things differently, and its infinitely more rewarding when you do. that's a musical virtue i think dylan, like a good 90% of musicians worldwide, neglect, and probably always will.

last i'm saying on this.

the newport incident was historic for the wrong reasons. the crowd were sheep who thought dylan's music could only be played on acoustic because they'd only heard it played acoustic. not because it was oh-so-profound for dylan to try playing an electric instead, which i'm sure countless other songwriters had done before him. in fact, yeah that probably was the biggest performance innovation he ever made, but he only conceded to the crowd's whining and went and got his acoustic for them instead. talk about sticking to your guns.

Ask yourself...what has Billy Corgan done for music? Seriously, I love SP, they're my favorite band of all-time, but they're not exactly changing the musical landscape. They're just a darn good band. Bob Dylan is a probably just behind the Beatles in terms of historical importance, with the Rolling Stones nipping at his heels. Come on, dude. The Pumpkins were a moderately successful 90's rock band (not even THE most successful of the decade!). Take off the rose colored glasses.
