Default Asheville/Fillmore acoustic songs (2007-2008 acoustic SP in general)

Be interested to learn everyone's thoughts on this era a decade and a half down the line.

For me, these songs marked the last instances of that morose Pumpkins sound we heard in the Adore and Machina eras. Since then there's just nothing that's felt quite like it. It's a hard thing to articulate because everyone's experiences shape them differently, but there's something deeply mournful about some of these songs. They feel like the end of something, a style of writing that, either through choice or simply inability to recapture it again, hasn't returned, not even on Bill's solo albums (despite on paper similar stylistically). They don't capture whatever these songs did. Besides a properly structured Machina, obviously, I think a well-assembled album of these songs is the main thing I'd want released from the archives.

A lot of good stuff:
Psalm 131
No Surrender
Again, Again, Again (The Crux)
Sunkissed
Zeitgeist
99 Floors
Mama
The Rose March
Peace + Love
?
Promise Me
Communion
Orpheus Descending
If All Goes Wrong
The Leaving Lament

There's a pretty good album in there somewhere. All these songs are just so dour, in a way that I find so compelling. The chords, the melodies, the instrumentation, it all contributes to it. I'm not American but these songs have always brought to mind a rural American sunset. They simultaneously capture teenage idleness and longing, alongside a more adult romanticisation of those times. Obviously there're other cool bits and bobs like Pox, I'm Doing the Best I Can, !, Corsage in Flames, etc. but the ones listed above really capture something. I feel like a kid lying on his back in a bed in his grandparents' spare room with the bedside lamp on listening to some of these songs, in the exact same manner I did listening to Mellon Collie or Machina or some other album. Now that I can't go back to that phase of my life, I listen to these songs, and they just make me sad. In a way that makes me feel glad I had those times, but mournful that nothing can bring them back. "Lost on this road, are there any real Sundays to find?" has always hit like a truck, a Big Truck 05 if you will. But if I take a wander through my old village again at dusk, earphones in, listening to stuff like this or Machina, I can feel myself getting ever, ever so close to getting back there. But not quite.

But yeah, just wondering what you guys think of these, if you have any particular favourites or think any of them are stinkers and whatnot. Merci, mes garçons.

It would have been great if they stuck with the "american gothic" vibe longer than they did. it suits him.

rose march is an amazing song

Yeah, I think this era had a lot of unrealized potential.

Yes I have a rip of the concerts from If All Goes Wrong, the floor gig and the crowd gig including all those songs. It's really good. 99 Floors has a definite early Pumpkins flavour, and a lot of those songs tap into the same kind of songwriting from the earlier era.

The acoustic arrangements get a bit samey after a while, so would've been nice to hear fully realised versions of those songs. But instead of doing that, we got Teargarden.

the acoustic band recordings on It All goes Wrong are pretty good - I would have taken more of that even if it becomes samey. I think American Gothic was a miss and overproduced.

Strongly agree. I see American Gothic widely panned here but it is my favorite post-reunion collection of work by a mile.

By the way, I was re-watching the DVD video where Billy appears writing the song mama and noticed he has an alternative version of In My Body lyrics.

SPFC has a few wrong verses (just for the moment X just pull me over — June's outcast X made dark eyes — left hiding, I form the screams X left hiding apple trees)

In my body is such a great song. Can you imagine a whole album that doubles down on that style? Wasted sunsets indeed.
