It's a song that shows Billy has a very simplistic understanding of why people used to like the Pumpkins in the first place. I mean, obviously, we all have songs that we feel convey our own feelings and sensibilities. But I've always kind of assumed that few can relate to Billy's mad misogynistic outpours. What I appreciate about XYU is the artistry, the way he manages to express an ugly situation in a very raw, immediate way. It makes you feel and then think about what you felt. It's got nothing to do with "remembering the song you had sex to in a car in 1996".

XYU is probably the worst 'epic' song

I used to hate X.Y.U., but it grew on me. At the time, I thought that the riff was kind of simple and boring and the song really dragged on that one riff.
It's a thoroughly evil sounding song, and is probably SP's heaviest. It's a concentration of the essence of what made SP what it was at the time. I once showed the song to a friend of mine who's into all sorts of death scream metal; he thought the riff was funny for some reason, but when the DIIIIIIIIE bit came up, he suddenly got this look on his face that was a mix of shock, surprised and impressed. |

MCIS is a masterpiece in part because of the wide variety of material on the album. It's amazing to me that it fits so well in a list of songs that ******* Tonight Tonight, 33, etc. I have a difficult time thinking of another big concept album that works so well in that way. And I can't think of another band in the 90s that created such a wide variety of music and did it well.

the version from 2000 in that other topic where he reads the fake journal is the most awkward/awesome thing

"X.Y.U." is much like "Geek U.S.A." It has that energy that only the classic four could convey and attempts to see either of them without the original four are pretty sad.
The notable exceptions being the one on the Adore reissue and the one from 2000 (with the journal) but those are so far removed from the original song I see them as a different best altogether. |

instead of being xyz, the proper order of the letters in the alphabet, it's xyu to represent the craziness and disorder of the song. that's how i've interpreted it for the longest time but it's probably a shallow interpretation at best

the original title of the song was "Spum" - i can't remember which interview or set of liner notes this was in, but it came out around the time MCIS was reissued. i was listening to the Reading 1995 recording a little while after and Billy shouts out "Spum!" in falsetto right before going into X.Y.U.

I love the brutality of some of the Mellon Collie era songs. When I listen to XYU, Tales and especially Marquis in Spades, I want to go on a killing spree.

Haha yeah. Marquis in Spades is so fucking awesome. I've always found it weird that (supposedly) the rest of the band hated the song so that's why Corgan just used it as B-side. The Zero single had so much great shit on it.

Definitely a great song. In terms of "heavy" songs I would have much rather seen it on Mellon Collie than "Tales of a Scorched Earth."
