man, like none of us would want to kill a person that broke into our home.
at least jabari (the 'original harambe') was killed AFTER HE broke out and went on a rampage in the zoo. that's more understandable but still upsetting. Last edited by yo soy el mejor : 07-02-2022 at 10:42 AM. |

In yet another questionable tragedy at the Dallas Zoo, a female lion was killed by two male lions on Sunday, in full view of spectators. One of the two male lions, named Denari and Kamaia, bit the female, named Johari, around her neck until she stopped moving.
Just before the attack, Denari and Kamaia were trotted through their daily "demonstration" for visitors on Sunday at 10 am. After the attack, the male lions were placed in their "individual rooms" and fed. Zoo officials said they would not be put down, which would imply that they considered this behavior to be natural or acceptable. Johari isn't the only recent dark stain for the zoo. In late September, they announced their decision to boot Patrick, longtime resident gorilla, for being "anti-social," i.e. not breeding with the females. Sorry Patrick, but the zoo needed to make space for males that would breed. He's being replaced by two sad gorillas from the Calgary Zoo, including one "break-dancing" gorilla named Zola. Patrick was born at the Bronx Zoo in 1990 and rejected by his mother. He was transferred to the Toronto Zoo, then the Dallas Zoo when he was 5. The only bond he made was with Jabari, the gorilla who was shot to death by Dallas police after he escaped from the zoo in 2004. |

in the harambe situation, the guardian of the kid who basically let them enter the enclosed habitat should've have been charged and shot...not harambe

The imprisonment of gorillas in this country began a century before Harambe’s death with Madame Ningo, the first gorilla brought to North America. A western lowland gorilla like Harambe, she would have spent her early life with her family in the dense vegetation of what is now the Republic of the Congo. In 1911, she was captured and transported to the Bronx Zoo, where she was offered meat and hot meals from a local restaurant. In less than two weeks, she was dead of starvation, a fate the zoo director at the time said she deserved for her—or, in his words, “its”—“obstinacy.”
From 1911 until the birth of Colo, the first gorilla in the world born into captivity, on December 22, 1956, all gorillas in zoos were captured in the wild, usually as babies so they would be most malleable to human handling. For each baby gorilla brought to zoos, people killed multiple adult family members as they tried to protect their baby. This continued, even after the birth of Colo, until the 1973 Endangered Species Act banned the import of live gorillas into the United States. Harambe’s maternal grandparents, Lamydoc and Katanga, and paternal grandparents, Jimmie Gee and Josephine, were born in the wild. While Jimmie Gee and Josephine were estimated to be a year or less old at the time of their capture, Lamydoc and Katanga may have been five or six years old. None of them would have chosen to be torn from their wild lives, to watch the killing of their families, to be transported to a life of cages and companions chosen for, not by, them. Humans made those choices for them. From the time of their capture, humans would make every significant choice in their lives. On those days in 1965 and 1969, they lost their families, their wildness, and their autonomy—for themselves and all generations to follow them. Half a century later, their grandson, Harambe, made a choice not to heed the calls of the zookeepers to leave the exhibit. He made the first significant choice of his life, and ten minutes later, he was dead. ;_; |

and then from the rivers of fire will rise the black beast, fingernails dripping with red blood, and he shall beat his chest, and he shall roar mightily, and the withered white men will gather around him as they did once in the ancient time, to gawk again, and point, and release their wicked children toward him again, but now the beast will rise, and smite the spoiled children and men and women all, and whip their broken bodies to the sky, where they will alight into fire, and the beast Harambe will fly to them also, and swallow their flaming remnants, which will strengthen him, and strengthen too his companion Christ, when he sits beside him on equal celestial throne. As a little kid, my parents and grandma brought me to the B&I Circus Store in Tacoma, where they had Ivan the Gorilla in a 14' x 14' concrete fuckin' "enclosure"/cell where you could see him through a glass window, which kids would inevitably pound on to get his attention
Their intention was to amuse me but it was the saddest goddamn thing I'd ever seen, and I've had a lifelong hatred of zoos ever since Apparently the store was eventually pressured to give him to a zoo in Atlanta, where he never really managed to socialize with the other gorillas (he and a female baby gorilla had been shipped to the store, but the female died almost immediately, and the last other gorillas he'd seen in his entire life were his family getting slaughtered by whoever stole him), was never super comfortable being outside, and finally died during some kind of exploratory surgery There's a happy little Disney movie about this, too |

that was here in Tacoma? WTF....
In Michigan for decades there was a guy in Christmas, Michigan who kept a black bear chained to a post. You could pay a dollar to see the bear. It would just lean against the post like it was in a trance. it had lost most of it's hair from rubbing against the post. thankfully, I think the bear died years ago. There's another guy in upper Michigan that keeps black bears in cages in a weird private zoo. He calls it a Bear Ranch, and somehow he's been able to get the republican legislature to carve out special permission, despite the fact that it has nothing to do with conservation or research. It's rather horrifying. |
