I remember netphoria circa 2007 piecing together that Heavy Metal Machine was going to be the road map for the new material - even before Zeitgeist came out, and not something like Siamese Dream or the more whimsical pumpkins. The willy wonka outfit too... yikes.

I guess the current state of Pumpkins has gotten so bad that Netphoria now looks back nostalgically on the Zeitgeist era. I actually liked the live band a lot from 2007-2008. It was a different beast than Smashing Pumpkins 1988-2000, but still felt like it had the spirit of Smashing Pumpkins. Nothing from 2010 on has captured that same essence.

Agree. Zeitgeist sucked but the live shows of 2007 (especially the residency shows) felt like the Pumpkins. I remember how much Gossamer reminded me of 1996 Silverfuck

Right off the top of my head, I can think of the 2001/early 2002 Zwan shows, these run of shows in May and June 2007, the Spirits in the Sky shows in 2009, and the Record Store Day show in 2010. Unfortunately, Billy always manages to get things crashing back down.

This is the most frustrating thing about Billy. It’s not that he doesn’t realize his music has value -it’s that he tries to pigeonhole it into his business plan like some artist crushing exec. “We need to tailor this to the way people listen to music now”.

Just follow your muse and it will find its audience Billy. The problem is that he doesn’t realize being true to himself will naturally have ups and downs, and the super success he craves comes when his muse aligns with the Zeitgeist.

Exactly. And he keeps on repeating that same mistake.

Follow your muse:

Be patient. Heal the relationships with your former bandmates. Meet with D'arcy.
Start small, don't rush it. Jam sessions, small tour (like Arising), write songs, record a new album eventually, big tour eventually.

Don't follow your muse:

Be impatient. Follow the money (arena tour). Take as few risks as possible (Jack Bates, Jeff Schroeder).

It's gonna be cool explaining this look 10 years in the future when nobody can really remember who My Chemical Romance was.

He’s been following a formula for the past 17 years that goes against the formula that made him famous and it isn’t working and never will but he keeps banging his head against a wall trying to make it work like a complete moron. What’s that definition of insanity again? It makes me nauseous when I hear an interview and he says to Jimmy or the producer “no no no it sounds too much like SP we have to change it

But yeah I agree these aol sessions were amazing thanks mainly to jimmys drumming and a bit of passion when bc tried to make it big again, superchrist from this session has to be included on a live cd mixtape of best live tracks 1988-present

Follow your muse:

Release the Chicago Kid album.

Don't follow your muse:

Put it in a can because some people complain on the internet.

These performances were pretty popular in their own time and still seem to hold some magic

Something went right for a change

The only performance from that session which felt off was Tonight, Tonight.
That's why I didn't embed it here.

Word up. Billy seems to care more about impressing the industry with his business acumen than being an actual artist.

Yeah these were good
Jeff wasn't quite "The Shredder" yet, he & Ginger were still just essentially glorified D'arcy & James replacements
Lisa tho, she was awesome. Wish she'd been around longer. And not just cos she was the hottest female in SP history

Love Lisa. She felt like such a welcome addition to the band and actually was able to bring something unique
