"Swooooon". That's it really. Oh and "the colour of your love / is grey". That's all I remember.

Hearing the news from useless guitarist #3. Wow, as if the whole thing wasn't disappointing enough.

Makes sense; the only two good songs on the album.

On another interview I heard with Jeff, he was saying that it was done remotely in the same way that Cyr was with the band members collaborating back and forth and sending pieces to and from one another.

WHY?

I just cannot fathom how a solid album can come from that degree of collaboration. I heard one with Flea and Rick Rubin the other day and they were talking about the new RHCP album and in the story of every song on there, it came out of some human to human interaction in the studio.

Now, I know that RHCP isn't the benchmark for a universally loved band, to put it mildly - but my brain connected the two. I've never been a musician in a studio, but I have seen 666. And while there are 5517 other factors at play, one HUGE one has to be that you're in a room with people who you have a friendship with and can play off one another's strengths, laugh and go back and forth with and build songs.

I see that lack of them being in the same room as a nail in the coffin already, sadly... as if there weren't other major risk factors by them making an album in 2022 with such a false hope inducing tagline as "the conclusion to the trilogy of MCIS and Machina" which inherently makes NO sense to me, even as a fan that's been reading on this forum since 98.

Kinda think the friendship bit is what's missing here.

Wait, but I thought Melton Collie was a concept album he planned with Zero as a character?

Now, in this post, he says he didn't know then that he would become the song Zero and Zero would become a part of his assumed identity
aka Billy - "I'm making all this shit up as I go"

Hold on. Is the author correct that Machina was supposed to be number two in a trilogy that started with Mellon Collie?

Billy makes this shit up as he goes.

Last Mogwai and a few of the recent King Gizz albums were done remotely and were just fine

Think the issues will run a bit deeper but the dynamic won't help. There's absolutely zero chance of James dropping everything to spend months in the studio with Billy these days anyway.

The band's unique and irreplaceable chemistry is one of the only assets they have left. This zoom album is complete bullshit right from the premise stage. It has no chance of being good and I think the band knows that as well.

It's so rare, infuriating and heartbreaking to see such a legacy act not being able to take one good call like that.

Is there any other known example in music where an artist canned an album out of spite?

the Zoom thing is really pissing me off. you don't get fucking Mayo from them playing fucking email tag

i can't imagine why you'd even want to work like that? if you're not playing live in the same room it's just academic. it's nothing.

Probably accurate, sadly - but I think there's still SOMETHING there, especially in the BC/JC arena. The relationship isn't all bad.

And James didn't have to come back - and surely he needed the paycheck but didn't REALLY need the paycheck so there had to be some degree of familiarity and desire to play and tour with those guys again, knowing that D'Arcy wasn't going to be a part of it.

Good summary of my longwinded post. I'm no musician, but I know it's impossible.

I assume all locating to one space to record for months is expensive. Cheaper for Bill to do a lot on his own and email for praises.

You're all being a bit delusional, methinks. MCIS was the only time they ever recorded as a band, afaik.

And since new stuff is unlikely to sell, who's gonna pay for James and James #2 accomodation? Sure they could stay at Willy's mansion and have breakfast at Zuzu's like real friends but let's be honest friendship was never on the cards.

billy will rent a white van for them to sleep in if they buy a $250 breakfast (signed, numbered, limited edition) at zuzu's each day.

At least before they were able to "fool us" with the sound of a band via Gish, Siamese & even Zeitgeist

by this point it very much sounds like the process

Question

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but I don't recall seeing it... have we considered that ChicagoKid just wasn't working, like he just wasn't happy with how the recording had gone? I know the songs we've heard were solid, but that hasn't stopped him before from fucking it up in the studio. Like, have we always taken Billy at his word here that it's this great album ready to go?
