yeah, never really sought anything out of my own accord but have heard some stuff from the new album, some random tunes off that cover album (the version of "When the Levee Breaks" is fuckin' gorgeous) and whatever else was playing at an old friend-of-mine's house whenever i'd go over

Mer de Noms is a fucking classic. Seeing them opening for NIN in 2000 with that material is a concert life highlight for me.

well except for everything pre-Lateralus. And pre-Lateralus Tool is the best Tool.

lol I can't believe that "Chocolate Chip Trip" is an actual song, not an interlude. They played it every show on the last tour under the name "CCTrip" and it's basically just a 3 minute Danny Carey drum solo with some additional synth sounds. Boring as hell, even the biggest ass-kisser Tool fans addmited to it being filler.

I was expecting at least some creative growth over 13 years, otherwise what were they taking so long for? Even a change in production style would have been welcomed because it sounds practically identical to the previous album.

They're almost like the RHCP "funk verse/beach boys chorus" - except it's "prog riff verse/arena rock chorus"

I like Fear Innoculum (the song) but even I have to admit I've only listened to it a few times. I'm a huge Tool fan, but I kept waiting for the song to take things to the next level and it never quite gets there. But maybe once I'm able to listen to the full album, I'll appreciate it more. Sometimes intro tracks are there to rev you up for what lies ahead and I hope that's the case. I've liked all of their albums and most of the APC and Puscifer stuff so I expect it to be good, but we'll see.

which doesn't matter very much in the end cause it sounds extremely by-the-numbers, every song gives me the feeling I'd heard it before on their previous albums

spoiler alert/short review:

Just finished listening to the album. After one listen I only really digged two songs. That is 33% of the album although, when you consider that one of these 7 tracks is a drum solo with some synth bleep-bloops behind it. The two tracks would be Culling Voices and 7empest.
The first one is probably the least Tool sounding of all, and the only which doesn't really sound like anything you could have heard on the previous albums. Some of the vocal melodies are reminiscent of the minor-ish stuff like Sober for example, but that would be it. It still does have a very typical and predictable arrangement, it's incredible how formulaic a lot of the arrangements on this album are.

7empest relies a lot more on the riffs and line cliches that Tool have used on all previous records, but what makes it good in my opinion is the energy and powerful grooves, one of the tightest sounding songs they've ever recorded. It definitely helps that this is, as far as I remember, the only song on the album with the snares on, and that definitely adds a lot of energy to the grooves. There were moments in this song, and in some others, where you can really feel a perfect scream or high note moment, but it just doesn't happen, and you can't blame the guy anymore, I wouldn't strain my voice at his age either.

Pneuma, the second track, reminds me of Schism for some reason and didn't really sound interesting to me that much, although I should listen to it again. Much more formulaic than the two tracks I mentioned above.
Invincible and Descending I've already heard live and don't differ much from what I said about Pneuma. Invincible is musically a bit more interesting than Descending. The title track is definitely the weakest imo. I've already written about it in this thread.

The weird thing that I've noticed is that a lot of the songs have these riffs which sould like perfect chorus moments, or at least interludes which sound like they were written with vocals in mind, but are left off without any vocals.
Except for the drum sound which is fantastic, I don't really dig the squeaky clean production. Makes the bland riffs sound even blander.

Oh and here's a fun drinking game: Listen to the album and every time Adam Jones plays a chugging riff that consists of only the low D note in 7/8 or 9/8, take a shot.

I forgot to add, that song also sounds like something they won't play that often live, just because of its complexity, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong
