Accurate. Encountered someone who was a more casual SP fan and they thought it was a “nice happy song” and I’m like “dude I listen to this song when I want to die”.

SP reached the level of some lower league football club that won a couple things decades ago..like Nottingham Forest.. and their fans are laughing at Chelsea or Man City because "they've got no history".

They had the number one album at one point that’s a pretty high level if we’re just talking based on popularity which it seems like you were. That wasn’t what I was talking about though. By your logic AC/DC reached a higher level than SP and I think you know that isn’t true.

Only if the price is right, though. Fewer than twenty bucks to see some band that I really like two or three songs by, but never had the chance to actually delve into? Sure, if I've got nothing else to do that night. $50? No, I'll probably stay home and play video games.
absolutely, that's where i was going w/ the Smash Mouth thing

the best is when a band you're only "supposed" to like a few songs from come around for that type of price/accessibility but you actually know the whole set (cough, Filter)

you might even get the set list after, fan boi heaven

I'm genuinely struggling to think of a metric by which AC/DC has not reached a higher level than SP, and I'm not saying this in a "fuck Billy" sort of way

Uh…creativity, lyrical content, versatility, uniqueness, innovation, and emotion in music? Even if you want to go just by technical skill, Jimmy wipes the floor with anyone in AC/DC

Unhappy

I guess in 50 years when our grandchildren are sporadically venturing topside in suits originally designed for volcanic research, I have a much easier time believing one of them will be blasting "Back in Black" in their headset as opposed to "Zero." I don't think AC/DC is a better band, but in terms of leaving a mark on the culture, I don't think the Pumpkins are close competitors.

Also, SP are sorely lacking a song about Billy's balls. I'm sorry, but it's a pretty big gap in the catalog. AC/DC made it into the Hall of Fame pretty early for a reason, and the Pumpkins are running out of time to write the qualifying song.

The problem is that billy tried to be too many different things.
All the icons named earlier in this thread (save Bowie) are the same guy for 20+ years.

1991

1993

1995

1997

look, it was great at the time. I loved the re-invention as a die-hard fan. but for the casual fans, it was too many switcheroos and people couldn't follow. There's no BIG staple visual ICON to keep track of it. People need the visuals. The BALD guy did become his thing eventually.... but no one cared by that time. In hindsight I think it's what ruined the icon possibility. Hulk Hogan has 1 look, everyone knows it, that is an icon. Kurt has 1 look - died too quickly to really make a change of it.
you guys get it.

Well, balding is the one thing that isn't his fault. And it's kind of impossible to pull off the Gish hippie look without hair.
