Thumbs up Emily Barker - Tonight, Tonight cover

Released today. I thought some of you might like it. It's certainly much more pleasant to listen to than the majority of SP covers.

She's clearly a fan of SP- and even wrote a poem to accompany the song:

In a city of metal, glitter & stretched skin
behind a leathered band & thick black curtains
my heart beats double kick because
I’m the drummer of The Smashing Pumpkins
and we’re seconds away from walloping
into a sold-out stadium set.
The crowd are amped, keen to be teens again:
Tonight, Tonight smells of unrequited crushes,
Lynx Africa & the burn of firsts remembered.
Every song cradles place, past, peers, DNA.
Curtains rise & the roar is biblical. Billy turns
to me through the smoke, his scream starts the roll
of the Cherub Rock intro on snare. I raise sticks
above my head, count ONE! TWO! THR –

It's very nice. I often wonder with covers like this why they don't just make their own song, it's different enough that they'd get away with it.

Much better than the half-assed Snail Mail one.

I didn't like it. The snail mail cover is better.

The problem with the Snail Mail one is that it's pretty similar to the original, only worse - aiming for urgency and not quite making it. This one replaces the urgency with a really sweet longing that I appreciate.

Nice. drums a little weak. But i guess that's the style. Made me think of the lyrics a little differently. So that's nice.

Liked this but the vocals were too high in the mix.

Says a lot when the only thing being discussed on NP is a twee cover of a 29 year old song.

What do you expect for a band that broke up 24 years ago and haven't brought anything out since then? Discussions of 20 years of mediocre albums?

In Who Goes There, is the "never been to Katmandu" the first time SP has done a key transposition in a song?

Yes I'm kind of glad the Pumpkins never reformed and Billy just made solo albums. Didn't interfere with the legacy of the band one bit. Not one bit.
