Lots of 80s and 90s band have a healthy taping/sharing community. AFAIK Radiohead, The Cure, NIN, U2, etc. are all pretty decent in that regard.

Most post-2000 bands aren't. When stuff does get shared, fans don't often make an effort to keep it lossless and available. It's a generational thing, and it's getting worse.

With the Pumpkins, I always trusted the community to know their shit so recordings didn't become lost media. With Sufjan, I had to take on that role because no one else would. More recently, I am one of only a couple of people who catalogue Big Thief/Adrianne Lenker live material.

In the past 10 years, I've become a taper myself lol. Never thought I'd bother, until I realised that if I didn't do it myself, it wouldn't actually get done.

Right on. Definitely does to seem to be a dying art. Man, there was nothing like being on the C++ Hub back in the 90's early 2000s and finding/ trading shows. Was a different time. Miss it.

Not everything is lossless, but everything is in the best quality available (lossy webcast rips without transcoding, etc).

The more I think about it, this is the reason I stopped listening to some bands i.e. Silverson Pickups. I tried to get their community, but it just felt disorganized and I could never find live shows.

I stopped listening to them because they stopped putting out good music.

That first EP and first two albums are pretty good, but nothing after those grabbed me.

Oh man, it's hard to pick. I've been listening to the recent European tour a lot. I taped them when they supported PJ Harvey in London, and it sounds good, but 2024-08-12 (a festival set in Budapest) sounds better - it's ripped from a pro-shot video. 2024-08-06 (Gothenburg) is an audience source, but it's a much longer headlining show. Between those two you have most of the new songs. If you get into them, it's worth exploring the rest of the recordings because they are still working out the arrangements.

Going back further, I'm biased towards 2022-03-04 because I was there. It includes my favourite performance of Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. Really crunchy guitar tone that doesn't always come across in soundboard recordings.

I also taped 2022-02-27, and the Mary > Real Love sequence was incredible (edit: just relistened to it, I love this band). 2023-04-12 has my favourite Vampire Empire, but the vibes were a little off that night for some of the show.

2022-06-13 is cool for the Big Thief versions of 'ingydar' and 'not a lot, just forever', and also the extended version of Black Diamonds.

Both 'Live on the Current' sessions are really nice (I particularly like Mythological Beauty from 2017-07-06 and Not from 2019-10-21)

The growling/screaming part in Not from the Bunker Studio session (2019-10-21) is great.

I really like the chilled out version of Shark Smile from 2017-10-28 as well. It's an interesting show because they played as a trio (Buck is missing because he and Adrianne had just got divorced).

Adrianne solo shows:

I love the performances of 'anything' and 'cradle' from 2022-03-06. 2024-04-27 and 2024-04-28 had very different setlists with tons of unreleased songs between both of them. Both had excellent band versions of 'not a lot, just forever'. The song 'Bright Future 'is really good (it didn't make it into the Bright Future album) and 'zombie girl' on the piano is really sweet. Blameless/Nameless (not the official title) is great.

Another thing about SP, that's wild, is that Billy had the foresight to just put everything out there.

I mean, back in the early-mid nineties, the thought was pirated music was a bad thing. Artists didn't want their B-sides/ live shows heard.

IDK, Billy just seemed ahead of the curve in that respect. Whether he knew it or not, he put a shit ton of material out there, which was genius. He had organic reach before anyone knew what organic reach was.

Queen was my first real obsession when i was young, Radiohead blew me the fuck away after that when OK Computer came out and SP weren't far behind. But i dove much deeper into SP 'than i did Radiohead. Beatles and Sonic Youth behind that, and SMiLE era Beach Boys.

i agree sp has a catalog that is uniquely good for deep diving and when they were still a real band, it was just endless fun being a fan, but i also think this is one of the great parts about being young- you have an energy and enthusiasm to appreciate something in the moment without thinking too much about it. it's part of why i still love listening to classic sp- it just gives you a reflection of a glimpse of something you'll never have again.

now im old and the band is even older and they have three guitarists for no reason and they seem tired and uninspired and theyre touring with another old band who sounds strangely the same after 40 years and they seem never too far off from disbanding again, which at this point i wouldn't even be mad about as i've gotten to see them perform well enough to remind me they were once really special.

long live the mighty sp!

Yup, Queen. Still, they are tight as all get out on letting stuff out. Queen 1 is about to be released, but no “Polar Bear”? Only a live version of “Hangman”?

C’mon dudes, open the floodgates!

I'd say that the bands I came closest to learning the back catalogues of as well as SP's are Radiohead and Cursive. And by "closest to," I mean "I've listened to all their EPs and B-sides instead of just their studio albums. Even then, I've never delved into, like, super obscure rarities.

And I haven't even kept up with Cursive, as I still haven't listened to I think their latest two albums? More due to not having the time than due to disliking them or anything. I don't like their post-Happy Hollow stuff as much as their old stuff, but I don't dislike it or anything.

Artists that are up my alley enough that I feel like I should become an autistic mega-fan when I have the time and energy: David Bowie, Siouxsie and the Banshees.

I do think that Afghan Wings are the second-best '90s "grunge era" alt-rock band, right after SP.

The music that deviates from the rest of a wave often seems to hold up best long after the wave's peak. Nothing wrong with the likes of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc. But I find myself returning more frequently to soul and R&B-infused aggressive guitar rock of these four white boys, and to SP's eclectic shoegaze, gothic rock, metal, prog, and psychedelia-influenced alt rock, more so than the archetypal bands of that movement.

best thing about SP is how they'd rip this incredible 8 min song like starla, then at the end fade in 30 seconds of this beautiful, ephemeral random demo you've never heard, and fade out again, and onto the next.... that's fucking mastercraft shit. my god that's so fucking cool

Afghan Whigs didn't manage to burst their bubble, I think they were unlucky as other bands released huge albums the same time/right before they released their "best albums" (as in, the ones that had potential to become popular, like Gentlemen in 93 and Black Love in 96)..I was never a big grunge fan to be honest, bands like the Pumpkins and Afghan Whigs were able to evoke the same teenage-angst feelings but never stopped there. I've seen them live a few times, they always put on a good show too.

By the way, I was watching this old interview with Greg Dulli and all of a sudden James Iha walks in (@2:00)

Nothing really close, SP is my autistic special interest.

After them maybe Nick Cave and Mogwai in terms of seeking out b-sides and live stuff and trying to see them live as much as I can and actually maintaining a consistent interest for 20+ years.

But there's no other band where I read every piece of press and collect tedious detailed information about their gear and have to listen to things on release day and hunt down maximum live recordings and read their web forums.

Yeah, although I don't think they have albums worth of material they're great at keeping it all locked up.

I wasn't aware of this reissue by the way, so still a nice surprise to see Hangman finally release, albeit live! More than I was expecting to be honest.

Sorry for my ignorance, but has a tracklist been published?

the main thing about SP for me is that they have incredible emotional relevance in my brain. i've listened to the band so consistently and so deeply over the years that any given song can throw me back to multiple points in time and embody them with a sense of magic, a bright little spark in my life that gives things meaning, meaning so deep and rich it can bring me to tears or tap into a special place in my soul that only the pumpkins can touch. nothing makes me feel the way tonite reprise or meladori magpie or jelly makes me feel.

the only other band that has gotten close to this for me is alvvays, their songs and output are so wonderfully constructed, perfectly sunny and summery and bright with real artistry behind it. dinosaur jr is getting there, i vibe with J so hard, the slacker afraid to be expressive thing, that's my life right there.

but the pumpkins, the pumpkins are special. they have a sense of majesty, grandiosity about them that i've not seen another band match. i guess it's relatively random, what bands just hit you in the soul...
