Default cyr vs shiny and oh so bright

Which is a better album?

I bought the pinis haze edition of CYR, but still debating on whether to open it. It does not seem like it will sound much better than apple music streams.

Now I kind of wished I bought a different vinyl instead of this one. I may have liked shiny and oh so bright more.

shiny, on account of it is at least mercifully brief

I'm honestly shocked and appalled people aren't calling the first one by its proper name: No Past, No Future, No Sun.

Yeah, it doesn't abbreviate as neatly as when called it 'Shiny', but I mean come on

The sheer potential for No Penis/No Father/No Son jokes and the like is staggering. It has seldom been capitalized upon and this is wasteful. WASTEFUL, I say.

Anyway

Cyr by a little bit. A fair few of those Shiny songs needed more time in the oven and a producer who's less of a hibernating chipmunk, whereas the Cyr tracks feel way more fleshed out, in terms of what they're going for.

They've got about the same percentage of tracks I find enjoyable/average/awful.

CYR in a decisive knockout

Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1: LP / No Past. No Future. No Sun. never had a chance and should never have agreed to this fight

Yeah, this isn't close. Cyr is a lot better than Shiny. I love Silvery Sometimes, and I'd take Marchin' On over Wyttch as far as hard rockers go, and With Sympathy is pretty solid, too, but everything else on Shiny would be among the lowest tiers on Cyr.

Also, I feel like there is a relative consensus on what the best and worst songs are on Shiny. Same with Monuments. With Cyr, I see such a variety of opinions. I think that that bodes well for how the album will age, given the Pumpkins are such a dynamic band (even if Cyr is not a very dynamic record). I think people who are just okay on it right now might go back to it a year or more down the road and realize a song or two they overlooked.

Seems like cherry picking to call out that one comment. The problem with this forum is that it's not really possible to have serious discussion, being overpopulated with drunk postings and misanthropic, wanna-be comedians (like avclub but without the intellectuality). At least this 'roast' was legit funny, if a bit Borscht Belt.

For the record, I haven't listened to Cyr yet, though I will eventually.

Joke's on this guy because Disco King wasn't even alive in the 90s and is therefore a cool dude in the present tense for playing out his timeline accordingly.

While different in theory, I can't seem to distinguish between them in terms of how i feel about them. Both feel very much like a product of similar mindset and process that originated on MTAE. All songs have to hit specific points, they share similar structures, chords, melodies. There's no specal care put into hooks, bridges, solos. Everything is as straight as possible. The part of my frustration with Corgan is his inability to see how lazy this approach is. He writes a good one from time to time and it seems to be pure chance, he just stumbles into a nice song out of every 10 he releases.

Rivers Cuomo had a similar approach in early 00s. Just constantly write, write, write, amassing a huge catalog of songs to choose from. But instead of releasing all 500 of his songs written around that time he boiled it down to best 25 minutes and it turned out relatively well. But he did quietly release basically all of the songs, and the string of lifeless formulatic pop songs from The Green Album and Maladroit eras feels like modern day SP. Corgan would turn this gruelling songwriting excercise into three double albums released back to back. Scented color vinyl with tea and all.

They both represent a sound and emotional resonance consistent with a moonscape.

In other words, they suck the same amount

Cyr better. Shiny has no dynamics and I think I listened to it about 3 times in total because it was dog shit. I've listened to Cyr quite a few times.

I've given Cyr a total of 25 mins of listening
Shiny only had my attention for 15.

I'm not willing to declare a winner. they're both losers.

Cyr wins easy. I very much enjoy this style and I will probably come back to it from time to time. Not Shiny. For the reasons already mentioned mostly.
