Default Cafe de la Danse appreciation

I’d say this is the peak of the Zwan era. It’s this gentle breezy acoustic session in Paris, and it’s just so well done. They, of course, played some of these songs like 2 other times, some electric, some not. Friends as Lovers, A Certain Kind of Change are standouts for me. There’s a line Corgan delivers so well in A New Poetry — “As our worlds collide in a late night show…it’s a devastating loss - I know, all too well” — that’s just pure, weapons-grade BC.

It brings similar feelings and emotions that I get when listening to Beethoven’s 6th symphony, the Pastoral, and I don’t think that’s too grandiose a sentiment for a power-pop Christian rock Smashing Pumpkins side project.

Fully agree.

Best Zwan show.

"A New Poetry" is white hot jet engine Corgan prowess.

Yeah.

Zwan had 3-4 albums of solid gold material.

And what we got was the overthought, overproduced MSOTS and everything else shelved by Billy "BUSINESS GENIUS POP STAR" Corgan, cos he got weird over Pajo and Paz.

I mean... if Pajo is a dick, boot him out. Seems the real reason for the split was the record bombing.

Yeah this was great along with the early Zwan work. Just a shame we didn't get more Djali and had an album which didn't feature alot of the great songs they did

I tried listening to the show and it confirmed that I played the hell out of every Zwan live show in 2002-03 and I've burnt out all of these songs still. They fucked around with the form of A New Poetry most shows. There was one that I always felt was definitively the best... a full band performance where he mixed up the chorus each time and built to a stupidly long note. But no idea which show that was.

Nearly 20 years ago, fucking hell... will soon be the anniversary of Glasshouse, which is still the best show of theirs.

Maybe a good time for me to stop posting the same observations every single time it gets brought up on netphoria. Literally a handful of people in the world give a fuck about a bunch of unreleased/unrecorded Zwan material, and BC isn't one of them.

Ah yes I remember this. Fantastic song. Haven't heard it in ages. Wish someone (Ram? Ice Cream pls?) could tell us what date it was played on.

Dug into my mp3 archive.

I have a 9:14 no idea what show - it's the best version I have but a poor recording and not the one I'm thinking of. In this one he holds the note on the second chorus, and then on the third shouts repeatedly. This is pretty good tbh, but I remember a version that ended on the long held note.

And 8:59 - Galaxy St. St. Louis 04.07.02 - it's not this version.

The zwan album was horrible christian rock. Once again he left the beat songs aside. "Love lies in ruin" love it.....due to legal issues the reiissue of zwan is gonna come out in 2031

this song and performance is beautiful. he doesnt seem to care much for lyric writing anymore, but the djali zwan stuff or whatever it was called was brilliant.

The drop in quality of Bill's lyrics and songwriting from Zwan in 2003... to... TFE / ZG just a few years later is the biggest drop of his career and he's never recovered from it fully. There are sparks of the same genius here and there but Zwan is closer to SP1 than anything that came after.

He's in his head about it like he is everything. Not comparing any of his lyrics to Bob Dylan quality, but if he went with a similar self-reflective, self-aware approach as Bob has done as he's gotten older he could make something compelling. Instead he either tries and fails to replicate the cryptic lyrics he used to write, tries to write "for the times" or is tongue-in-cheek, all of which comes off super cringey.
