Billy needs to make his own line of toy Casio synths to go with his stale synth sounds. Shocked Cyr didn't come with any leftover Stylophone synths and cheap truck caps. Billy should put the same energy he does on creating a guitar tone into learning sound design with synthesizers. His synth sounds are usually very elementary and basic. Someone call Flood.

Well said, dude is a fucking amateur in the synth department. It's funny to think someone like Thom Yorke has the humility to learn everything from an assistant engineer like Goldrich while Billy, after countless hours in the studio with Flood, is still stuck with what sounds like factory presets.

i've never been annoyed by the synth sounds because they're bland or bad, i've been annoyed because generally i want to hear the smashing pumpkins melt my soul with guitar

I don't recall him saying that. What he did say was that it was a return to them working in the studio with the ethic and approach they used on old records.

Someone discussed this in another thread (or maybe earlier in this one). In the "Return of the Gish Guitar" video, he mentioned how fortuitous it was that he found the guitar as the next album would be a heavy guitar album.
