He’s basically describing an open pre-order. A month is too long for the window. Most labels will do a week. 2 maximum. And the turn time is usually 2-3 months. Not 3-6. As long as he’s not using some stupid service like q-rates. BILLY DONT USE Q-RATES.

And yea he wants upfront money otherwise it’s very easy to limit the pre-order to X amount of copies per person to discourage flippers. Usually 2 is the number. At least make them work for it.

unless he were to offer a bandcamp model where you pre-order the album through that but can opt to only buy the digital version for 8-15$ (billy would charge 15 not 8)

Why does billy have to reinvent the wheel? Neil young’s archive project looks concise and effective. Hell even Willie Nelson was selling digital copies of his shows. These weird preorder vinyl releases will result in resellers jacking up the price and end up isolating the fanbase even more so. It’s like he’s trying to crash the aeroplane. And then you know he’s gonna blame us for it not selling well.

Why can't Billy just release the archives digitally? I don't understand that at all. I don't have a vinyl player and don't want to get one. Releasing them digitally doesn't mean the vinyl won't sell, there will be plenty of fans who will want it.

He could put out a small vinyl run and a digital download on bandcamp for $10 annually, maybe even every 6 months and he would make bank.

I assume he doesn't because he's still thinking in terms of the 90's industry where every release is a future tent pole.

Exactly. There's no tent pole artists anymore.

Bands which were huge like U2, Depeche Mode, Pearl Jam, now seem to have no problem accepting their albums won't be hits (well, maybe not U2), but they release it for the fans and to have some new material for the tour.

And they still sell live tickets.

He really needs a great manager.
