I think at one point I had like 4-5 of them figured out.


Right now the only ones I can think of are the three already mentioned here.

There are some epic melt down threads on the o-board but I'm not about to dig through all that crap again.

It reminds me of the days when there was a secret traders cabal that had a list of all the people that had a copy of Avalon, well that is except for the 20 copies everyone on the list made without telling everyone else on the list.

Nope. I had one phone call with Monte, sounds about the same as you had. I was actually told explicitly that I wasn't part of the 13, he was just asking my opinion on what the best stuff to release would be. I told him early 92 Europe would be killer.

who ever was in charge claimed to have a big group, but they wanted to call all the shots so they kept everyone out of the loop.

i'm one of them as of earlier this year. the 13 people won't all know each other, nor collaborate on what they see as the best material. monty isn't the president of it either. more news will surface within the next week.

All I know is that Monte was head of L13, he chose all the L13 members (so you had to be his friend) and he was the only one who able to talk to Billy. Billy had to have their resumes because these people had to be highly educated. Billy specifically wanted 13 people.

i've heard all kinds of things: first they had to start up the releases from the archives, and it had to be absolutely groundbreaking. later their only job was to come up with one thing "the fans" would be very interested in. i think that ended up being the recordings from double door, and that ended up on the tafh reissue.

I was never told the ins and outs of what happened and it seems like what you know is about as much as I know. But some things really came to mind when I heard the stories.

Billy really wanted some insane idea that would make him look like a genius, part of which would be the story of fans being used in the think tank.

the L13 crew really weren't the right people for the job. Yes, they were all smart people with degrees and they all could have been utilized to create something great. But that doesn't mean they are professional marketers or know how to pull these projects off or even have experience pitching to clients creative ideas.

Lastly having Monte as the person communicating to Billy is flawed. He isn't a great communicator.

As for double door being part of TAFH instead of it's own release was smart. Billy utilized the money from the label, instead of his own to put out what fans wanted. He knew that very few would purchase some elaborate double door boxset.

It was a really tough job for L13, more than half the battle was convincing Billy. That's why Billy named them Lucky 13.

The funniest thing is the only thing the L13 did was start a thread and tell Billy what I and a bunch of others said.
