Nah, I get you, bro. It sucks when we can't do the things that we want to.

People rarely get punished for a first noise complaint. If somebody knocks on your door and tells you to knock it off, yeah, respect that and don't make the same mistake twice. But maybe it's overly cautious to be pre-emptive about it when there's the possibility that nobody is disturbed by your playing, anyway.

thank you, yeah, i hate that i have a passion that requires me to make noise and sorta like -- go against the general public order of silence and sort of have to argue my side of artistry and passion and expression versus 'well we might be trying to study/work/etc'. it's been a battle

as an addendum, and for the record and for posterity (forums are the last bastion of the internet, of course, last place for real humans typing real thoughts and feelings) --- i realize i am pansexual. i am listening to james' 98 solo LP and groovin, it's so earnest and warm, he got matt walkter to track on that record, so warm and open and natural

maybe i'll get highlights again

it's not like a moody thing but more so like, i feel bad every time i play because it's an apartment, or at least i feel like someone is going to yell at me so i can't really justify the space / playing as much as i would want to. and recently i figured out how to program drums in software to the point i can write out basically anything in my head (it's just less fun than playing though) so there's no music-making justification either

ahhh
This made me sad. You’re an excellent drummer and need to be able to play drums. anyone who makes you feel like you’re not ‘mature’ for being interested in music is truly non ambitious and boring. Electronic drums aren’t very loud so long as you’re wearing headphones. You could even build one of those little tennis ball platform things some drummers build for their apartment setup if you’re paranoid

I will fly out to wherever Ram lives and do the flaming bag of poop thing to any neighbor who complains about his drumming. LET RAM DRUM. LET RAM DRUM. LET RAM DRUM.

Ram, bb, it's not a childish thing. Drumming is clearly your passion and something that helps you immensely. I don't have any useful advice on how to make it work, but you gotta make it work.

I'll echo what ourruseoffools said: Anyone who makes you feel immature for making music is a gosh-darn fool. It sounds like none of your neighbors have actually said anything to you, so I gotta figure that other people in your life have made you internalize that idea. Those people: also gosh-darn fools. Guessing those were parents or parental figures so I'm sorry for calling them that. Maybe they're nice people otherwise. But in this one thing: fools. Maybe they told you that shit when you were 15 and were like "I'm gonna be the second drummer for the Pumpkins! And Jimmy's gonna adopt me because I HATE YOU, [usual teenage angst]" But pursuing it as an adult—even if it's just a hobby that keeps you sane—is perfectly mature.

it was the abusive husband that did the one in the pond but i highly doubt they will prosecute him. usually it seems with murders around here they know who did it but don't do anything.

i see what you mean -- this was one of the main stress points of the band i left -- like what makes it perfectly right and mature to aspire to play so and so shitty bar, but wanting to maybe sign a thing and actually get people to hear the songs is head-in-the-clouds, seemingly

i feel like there must be a middle ground b/w delusional rawk star dreams and giving up upon adulthood, but i don't know what it is exactly

thank you thank you god bless so very kind

a lot of it is PTSD from getting the cops called on me once by some miserable old man because i was playing ‘at night’ pre-noise curfew hours. and one time in college i was gently playing guitar at night and someone fucking banged on the door and BELLOWED ‘STOP PLAYING ACOUSTIC GUITAR *PLEASE*’ like chill the *fuck* out dude….
and during my initial college period my parents were fairly sternly pushing me further and further into a STEM degree i couldn’t stand…they’ve relaxed a good bit now but it wasn’t fun.
it’s definitely a sanity-maintaining hobby but it feels very isolating because there are so few drummers around, partially because it is so hard to find a place to play unless you have a house. so it seems like i’m fighting against the current constantly

~~~~~~~~~~
on a positive note today i actually booked 2 hours at a rehearsal space and it was super super nice. the guy who owned it was there and shook my hand and had a really uniquely perfect vibe — a lot of the “DIY” people i had to deal with in my old band had this very sort of sad burnout vibe almost…this guy seemed like a pro, you could see the energy he had under the surface, he was very kind — especially since i am poor at interacting with others. like normally when you meet someone they’ll be like ‘oh i’m Kevin’ or whatever and there’s a pause where i’m meant to go ‘oh hey i’m Ram’ but i ALWAYS feel awkward doing that because it feels overly cutesy and presumptuous…like i am not important, you know, he’s the owner of the place —- and a lot of that is because my name is a hard name to enunciate, it’s foreign, i have a speech impediment so it’s kinda just…a lot….and i’m sure he saw my booking email so like…agh
BUT all that is to say — THIS guy recognised i was reticent to say my name out of shyness, pure shyness, rather than some sort of arrogance like i feel some may think of me. i need to be more arrogant i spent sooo many fucking years hating myself…
And i got in the room and the kit was super nice, it felt great, i played Hummer and What Have They Done To Me and tracked a few jams / grooves I hopefully can cut up and write some guitar over.
And when I was walking in, the owner said hi to me, as i described above, and this very sort of…. almost ethereal MADM - type chick from the prior band was walking towards me in the hall and gave me a little ‘hello’
Back home from my surgery
Supposed to avoid putting weight on my left ankle for two weeks (lol, I can't) so I'm trying to at least make it through a couple days before I have to. Been crawling and scooting around to continue caring for my family, and the wrap came off within 2 hours of being home so I'll have to get that fixed. It will be a miracle if it sets correctly, because I don't have enough help to do bedrest for even a day. I'm still numb from the nerve block so I feel okay. Tomorrow will be more painful, I'm sure. I'm fucking tough. Which feels empowering to say as I'm crawling between rooms keeping children and myself alive with a sliced up leg.
Ah no, how on earth can you cope for two weeks? Drs are crazy if they think you can do that with two young kids.
Did you get the wrap fixed?
Sorry for my lack of well wishes. At work, I am shifting sideways into a different role, and the wrap up and handover is eating me alive this week.
Anyone have any plans for the New Year celebrations?
For the last however many years, we've just said bollocks to it, and stayed in with some takeaway food. I might go to someone's house if they're putting something on, that's cool, but the thought of going out to pubs/clubs/events on what I like to call "amateur night" fucking drains me.
To be honest even the takeaways have got so busy here on New Year's Eve that people queue for an hour before any of them open, and if you're not in that queue, you might as well go fuck yourself because you'll just be wasting your evening waiting for hours.
I might just cook.
Thanks for asking!! I'm mostly okay now, though sometimes the other side hurts from over-compensating. Overall it has been easier than expected!
