Default Time to move on?

After Cyr, I wasn't that excited for Atum; what I have heard is pretty disappointing. So what's next? There is no longer be any kind of hype or horizon for the band. I could imagine them putting out another dozen album recordings of diminishing returns over the next one or two decades. And it would all be more of the same in terms of engagement, interest, and defying (or disappointing?) expectations. What is there to look forward to? The chance of an Iha song or co-write? D'arcy returning? I think even these would be let downs. And there is simply no way that the Machina reissue won't underwhelm or even make us mad.

I just don't know anymore. Maybe it's time to move on.

Oceania gave me the slightest glimmer of hope that they might be able to make something engaging in the future. It was far from great, but recording an album with an actual full band (not just Billy and friends) gave the music an energy that had not been present in a long time. Then Monuments to an Elegy more or less torpedoed that momentum. From then on, I have just accepted it a good thing if we get two or three great songs from each "cycle", and can enjoy that since James returned, they have become an excellent live act. The studio material definitely does not intrigue me in any way like it used to. Only thing I am truly holding out for is the 12/2/2000 Metro show. Once (if) that ever drops, I will likely be done with SP as more than a Monte-certified "casual fan".

I did almost entirely check out between that era where Brad Wilk and Mark Stoermer were in the band to Jimmy rejoining. At that point, it felt like whatever intentions Billy had in playing as Smashing Pumpkins again had long become unclear. In retrospect, it seemed he felt the same way.

I guess it is one of those days (or weeks) when I can't find any reason that I am still doing this.

I have absolutely no hope for the new music, but like discussing this fact with people on the internet, so I will remain here. I like the old material enough to keep having conversations about that, too. And gen chat.

Machina reissue
Metro video
Zwan box set

After that I’ll probably keep buying archive releases, but as for actively following the band…

FutureEmbrace reissue?

Those are basically the only SP related things I care about.

I dgaf about their new music, even though I've tried. Each new song sounds like soulless over-processed garbage. Their music actually makes me FEEL empty.

Fuck that Beguilled riff too

Chug chug chug chug chugga chug chug
Chug chug chug chug bippty boo~

Fuck that riff and what this band has become.

Iím not into starting a flame war, but how many times do we need to say something sucks before it just turns into a mountain of negative energy that ultimately makes you feel like shit? Like itís gotta be painful to go on a forum and post the same thoughts on something day in and day out?

I know when I go through spells of posting here day after day it ruins my mood for that whole time period. Usually happens when pumpkins have new music out or a tour happening. Like doesnít it put yíall in a bad mood beating this dead horse over and over?

I think nova fritz has it right, like move on if itís giving you this much anger. Itís not worth yelling at a cloud for weeks on end.

Jump down my throat over this but Iím asking an honest question. Even posting this as a question I already feel nauseous and I might shit my pants from the stress of it.

I know I'm not the only one who's noticed the flame wars you've been rehashing in multiple threads here in the past few days, and I wonder (tone: sincere, trying to be helpful) if you might be at the tail end of one of those time periods and could use a break.

This is generally the same for me; it helps to do my dumb little jokes and japes here and to see the same from other folks. I'd just add, and perhaps this is relevant to the other half of this response, that when I'm stressed as opposed to just depressed, I start getting aggressive here and that ain't helpin' nobody feel better, and I need to get better about recognizing I'm in that state before taking it out on folks.

I'll take the part about being right, thanks. I guess I really wasn't thinking about this in terms of anger, but hopelessness and disappointment. But it is true that their new music is just tour promo. Tours are all that they have and I should accept that. Though if I recall, our abusive lord Bald once told us SP wasn't just about tours.

I donít think the new music is promo as much as the old music. New stuff isnít whatís brining people to the shows. So I get the sense theyíre doing new music because they want to, they could easily say to hell with new music and become a 100% touring legacy act. So I think thatís at least noble that they want to do that part of it still. Probably not for much longer if people end up hating it all anyway.

Who was it, Coldplay that recently retired from making new music? But still touring?

Hmmm i stopped hoping for new “actual” SP music after James came back and the first single was fucken Solara. That was it, i realized right there the hope was dead. Ive listened to most of what has come out since, at least once, but nothing has stuck and i don’t ever go back to anything post 2000 unless it’s rare fit of morbid curiosity

That said, i continue to follow SP/big willie news b/c it is frequently hilarious and/or entertaining

it was time to move on 10 years ago

if you've made it this far, for fuck's sake, just sit back and enjoy the utterly bizarre, jawdropping, but largely entertaining ride that is WPC & Friends compete w/ Gen Z part 3.23242525 (starring Jeff Shreds & Hooky's Boy)

This is like when people decide to delete their Facebook but decide to announce it days before doing so.

No one cares, just move on without making a spectacle of it.

You want to "move on," son? Do you not know where you are? Do you not understand why no one leaves? Do you remember your life before you got here? Do you remember what... you know... what happened to you that brought you here?

What special sort of hell is this?

I feel like I need a specific de-Corganization therapy so that I can finally move on.

If SP was a new band I never heard of before, I would not listen to this crap.

Me too. It's the same with U2 really, always hoping for something decent from their next release. I will listen to the new records to see if there's anything I like, but there's usually not. I won't spend any money on the new albums, I'll just stream them.

SP are just going further and further away from what I liked about them in the first place. They aren't even remotely similar sounding to what they were before. At least U2 are trying to get back to their "original" sound, but they are taking anything interesting away in the process.

If SP had something interesting to bring to the table with new material, that'd be fair enough. But they don't. It's just harsh grey synth mush with Billy's worst voice sailing high on top. Not even a good drum sound to enjoy.

You people.

Rather than making a grand exit, I am trying to articulate a real feeling of aimlessness/grief with the possibilities of SP for maybe the first time since the Iha reunion. If this is what a MCIS sequel sounds like then what the hell is left? Now that we know what ATUM is and the limits of Iha/Chamberlin contributions, I can't see any return to any sort of form I would care about.

This and paranoid is a big crybaby.

Suck it up buttercup.

At this point Iím just glad theyíre still doing great shows. Honestly as an old fan Iíd rather pay to see songs Iíve loved for years, so when it comes to new music I canít expect much. Odd that other people get really up in arms about it, like to a point where they have to talk about it daily. Like seriously what did yíall expect? Mellon collie 2? Hahahahahahaha

Crybaby calling me a crybaby. I fucking love it here.

Other grand, attention-seeking threads dominating netphoria right now:

What is a meh song that is God tire live?
Best ATUM track for sucking dick?
A return to porn???
best ATUM track for eating gash?
